Three percent of petrol in Thailand is of low quality

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Department of Energy Business (DOEB), Ministry of Energy, has randomly tested the quality of fuels from petrol stations throughout Thailand. Three percent of oil retailers are found to produce low quality petrol; most of them are operators from the northeastern region.

Out of 6,500 petrol retailers randomly selected, 200 or three percent of them are selling low quality fuels. The Department has taken legal actions against the offenders. The amount of low quality oil has declined from last year’s, which had taken up to 5 percent of the selected petrol stations. One of the reasons is that the DOEB has ordered to change the fuel color so contamination can be spotted easily.

In addition, next year the Department will improve the testing standard by assigning regional energy offices to control and inspect the quality of fuels in the gas stations in their own localities.

Korn suggests mobile operators to become Mobile Virtual Network Operators for 3G

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Finance Minister met 3 major mobile phone operators to discuss ways to improve Thailand's telecommunication system, suggesting them to become Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) for the 3G system.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij has invited DTAC, True Move, and AIS representatives to discuss ways to improve the Thai telecommunication system and problems concerning third generation telecommunication system (3G).

While waiting for the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), which will oversee both the telecom and broadcasting sectors, to be set up, Mr Korn has asked the private companies to join the TOT in operating the 3G service by becoming the Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) for the time being. All three has demanded a clearer time frame from the government.

The Minister said the government would speed up the process to solve the concession problem, by thoroughly studying the joint venture bill.

Commerce Min to draw up Thai-Hong Kong trade cooperation

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot announced that the Cabinet had approved plans to draw up Thai-Hong Kong trade cooperation in the fields that both sides will gain benefits.

After the Cabinet agreed for the Ministry to seek cooperation framework with Hong Kong, Mr Alongkorn has been meeting with the private sector and holding public forums. He said the entrepreneurs did not think that free trade agreement with Hong Kong would benefit Thailand because the Island was already an open trade zone.

They suggested that an agreement that state clear policy on certain products and services should benefit Thailand than having an FTA with Hong Kong.

The Chinese special administrative region is Asia’s center of logistics, finance, and banking. It is also the gateway to China.

Thai entrepreneurs have suggested that food and agriculture, logistics, tourism, creative economy, and SME are the main sectors that should be supported in forging cooperation with Hong Kong.

In 2009, Hong Kong was Thailand’s seventh most important trading partner, with a total trading value of 383 billion baht. Thailand gained a trade surplus of 264 billion baht.

Incoming Interior Perm-Sec Turns down Post

Incoming Interior Permanent-Secretary Mongkol Surasajja has turned down the promotion, reasoning that he does not want to tarnish the image of the ministry due to the investigation into his possible involvement in a computer purchase fraud. His appointment has been widely criticized to have come from his close ties to Bhum Jai Thai henchman Newin Chidchob as Mongkol is not senior enough for the post.
