When moving to or from Thailand with more baggage than we would wish to even attempt to check in, what is the best way?

I faxed Korean Air both in the U.S. and Bangkok but got no response and telephoning them only got tied up in language struggles.

There used to be something called 'accompanied baggage' but I don't know if that term even exists any more. It would be nice indeed to have all our stuff on the same flights and arrive at our destination when we do but alternatives are acceptable.

Have you done this recently?

Thanks

If you have 100kgs it is not that expensive to airfreight it. The more you send the cheaper it is per kilo. Unaccompanied baggage is pretty expensive and it does not nec3essarily go on your flight. Also it goes to customs and where you have to collect it and may charge duty on certain items same as airfreight.

I thought the benefit of unaccompanied baggage is that it DOES go on your flight and you collect it at the luggage carousel?

You just have to check it in a couple of days before your flight so it will be in the hold of the 'plane you're on.

At least that's how it was explained to me when I inquired, but that was some years ago now.

Thanks for the responses and I have indeed discovered that it is called unaccompanied baggage if intended to go on the same flights. Getting info out of Korean Air has been frustrating and I may have to go to the air cargo section of the Chiangmai airport to see what info I can get there.

This move is from Chiangmai to Salt Lake City (CNX-SLC) so simply replacing everything on arrival there is out of the question.

I am seeking the most cost-effective method of course and don't mind air freight if I can time it to arrive at the destination just before we do.

And the reason I am checking with Korean Air is because they fly out of CM and partner with Delta who flies into SLC. The next trick will be finding a trustworthy travel agent who can put that itinerary together.

Thanks again for your responses..

If you go the airfreight route, which I would reckon will be the cheapest option, then try to get a door to door delivery and get it to arrive AFTER you, so you can be home to receive it.

If you can't get D2D then it would still likely be better for you to collect from the airport after you've arrived 'cos if it's sat around in Customs they'll charge you storage / demurrage on it.
