August 4, 200520 yr The Thais look after their own oldies, but in the west they put the old folks into some rest home that smells of wee wee. Everyone sits around swaddled in blankets waiting for the Grim Reaper and wondering why the Grandchildren don't come around much, and feeling arthritic due to the climate. So....how about Sheltered Housing, aimed at elderly Westerners located in Thailand, by a nice beach, in near proximity to a hospital with resuscitation equipment. Next door to the sheltered housing is a beachfront rest home with good nursing care (cheap in Thailand) and a terrace overlooking the sea. "Where's my sandals?..." "Where you left them...." "Where's my glasses?" "On your head" "I need another bed bath..." "That's four you've had today"
August 4, 200520 yr they may look after their own but the neglect exists in family homes as well. I one saw an old woman (my mates granny) who had a stroke & she was discarded at the back of houses in a piss & crap ridden matresses unable to move or feed herself, when I aske dwhy they didn't take her to hospital, they just shrugged & said mai pen rai. Sick.

Around 10 years ago the Japanese had this very idea - a "retirement village" somewhere in or near Pattaya. With the high cost of labour in Japan and low costs in Thailand it made perfect economic sense. As I recall, the Thais didn't like the idea of Japan dumping all its helpless and unwanted old folks here though (I don't think the old Japanese folks were too keen either) and the project never got off the ground.
August 4, 200520 yr Author a "retirement village" somewhere in or near Pattaya dumping all its helpless and unwanted old folks here If my Warning Level wasn't so high I would try a joke here about Pattaya already having a lot of unwanted helpless old folk in it.
