Smoking In Thailand

SiamOne

Recommended Posts

Smoking is well known to cause and exacerbate various types of illness in our bodies. The tobacco companies are slowly being forced to stop advertising their products in the west. In Thailand and other eastern countries, the adverts are exactly the type that have been banned for years - namely connecting smoking with sport, sexual adventure and glamour.

When will our government ban these terrible adverts. The young people in Thailand are addicted and will become sick. So many smoke, it is a disgrace.

Can anybody help??

No. I think Thailand has the right idea relating to smoking. Many young people don't smoke now as they are taught it is bad. They have the pictures of nasty things on the fag packets, they ban anyone smoking on tv, even movies.

When are they going to stop advertising alcohol, it causes much more harm than smoking does. The western countries are worse than Thailand in this respect.

What do you want the Thai government to do, have another war on drugs - nicotine and kill a few thousand people.

With alcohol there are safe levels of consumption. With smoking, there is no safe level.

It would be good to see some government initiatives to cut down on alcohol abuse as well.

In Australia tobacco advertisements have been banned for many years. This includes all media, sporting events, billboards, etc. Additionally, smoking has been banned (or soon will be- somes states are lagging) in restaurants, clubs, pubs, casinos, public buildings and even sporting stadiums. There are even plans to ban parents from smoking in cars containing their children. Cars are considered to be one of the most dangerous passive smoking environments. Large Government taxes and graphic warnings on packs are part of the anti smoking campaign. There are also extensive educational programs, aimed at youth, warning against smoking .

It has been estimated that just 16% of the population of Oz are smokers. This is the lowest in the world. Some reseachers believe this will be 0% in 20 years, particularly in Western Australia which is leading the push. A concerted campaign by a committed Thai government could make a difference to the health and welfare of the country. Smokers, of course, fight against every new step in the fight with sad arguements about their their human rights while ignoring the rights of others.

U.K. Bans Smoking in Public

By BBC Action Network Team

By 2008, the UK could be a largely smoke-free zone. :D

The government has said it will introduce a smoking ban in almost all public places in England by then.

An earlier ban is due to take force in Scotland in 2006 (next year) and groups in Wales and Northern Ireland are calling for similar laws.

The Repubilc of Ireland has already done so................ :D

With all the complaints from innocent holiday makers getting fined 20 pence when discharging their smoking refuse on Suk Rd i was under the impression that the LOS Government were up to scratch...seems not? :o

I haven't done research, but in the UK it seems more young people are smoking.

Goverment efforts to reduce the amount of smokers seem to have the opposite effects.

Banning smoking in public places and transport is a good start, but education doesn't really work.

I know that smoking is likely to kill me and same as most smokers would like to give it up. I will stop, but not now. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week. Probably I will not stop until it stops me. I know I'm stupid, but I am an addict.

Funny that in UK, can be treated like a leper because I smoke a legal drug.

If I was addicted to an illegal narcotic, the goverment will fall over backwards to help me with free prescription drugs etc.

I can't make any suggestions to improve the situation. But I will always do my best to dissuade youngsters.

well, I agree with the way the War on Drugs was handled. The only way to get rid of the problem was "treating the dealers and users like mosquitos" like Thaksin said in his launch speech.

You wouldn't say that if it were one, or more of your family/friends who were shot down for the "terrible crime" of being a drug addict. :o

Addiction is a disease. Many addicts are sick people trying to get well, not bad people.

Do you think that Toxin should kill all HiV +ve people too. That would solve the problem, wouldn't it?

You will notice that I wrote FREE prescription drugs

Also I wrote ETC.

What I meant to imply was that someone addicted to an illegal narcotic will receive more sympathy and help than a smoker

When I was living in Thailand 25 years ago literaly every male you met was smoking 24/7. I went back for a visit end of last year and found that almost no one smokes in public anymore! Things have improved greatly (at least in Chiang Mai) over the last quarter Century.
