Sports 'fans' ?

Featured Replies

Some so-called sports "fans" are increasingly getting way out of hand the world over. North America, down under and across the pond included. This latest display is truly sick and the minority involved should be flogged in public like days of old :o

Fans taunted over London bombings

Police have launched an investigation after Queens Park Rangers fans were taunted about the London bombings.

The club's supporters were subjected to chants including, "You're just a town full of bombers" by Hull City fans.

Hull City chairman Adam Pearson apologised to QPR and promised to ban anyone found to be involved in the abuse during the game on Saturday.

Police said a 21-year-old man from East Hull, arrested for racist chanting, was fined and banned from football matches.

Some upset QPR fans left the KC Stadium before the end of the game. Both Hull City and Humberside Police are studying CCTV footage to identify those responsible.

One QPR fan, called Val, who was at the game, told BBC News: "Suddenly the Hull fans started shouting songs about the London bombings. "It was really upsetting. We came out of the ground in tears. I couldn't believe it."

Hull's police commander Ch Supt Sean White, said: "I fully agree with the sentiments of anger and disgust.

"We're talking about 30 to 40 shameless cowards who made these chants towards the end of the game. We're just not going to tolerate them.

"We did intervene and made a number of arrests on Saturday. It has brought a great deal of shame to Hull City.

"What I really need is the support of the public. While we know their faces we don't know all of their names."

'Disappointed and embarrassed'

Mr Pearson has apologised to QPR supporters on behalf the club and said he was "extremely disappointed and embarrassed" about the chant.

"We have clear video footage of the group of youths responsible for this appalling chant, and when we identify and locate them, they will at the very least be banned from the stadium for life, and hopefully with sufficient evidence, they will be liable for official police charges."

He added that two people were removed from the stadium over the chant, and were being interviewed.

A section of Hull City's stadium is to be closed until the police investigation has finished.

Wow. This is one of weridest things I have read in a while. Such behavior just doesn't make sense.

Makes me feel ashamed to be English... :o

Don't feel bad. I think it was a year or so ago that the Dallas Cowboys(American Football) won a game and people went to the streets to celebrate and people where killed , beaten, and raped. Hurrah for sports.

Huh?

Don't remember that one.

The Dallas Cowboys haven't won a game in so long you must be recalling the 80's. :o

I am guessing, here as I don't follow sports that well. I remember watching pictures of the riot and I could've sworn it was Dallas. Maybe they lost then? I'll have to ask someone who knows sports. But I know that a riot occured over a football game.

I should imagine nothing to compare to the riots that occur over Soccer games... :o

Oh I see...

Football is the game where the guys wear the hot pants and shoulder padding.

In the term 'sports fans' the word 'fan' comes from the word fanatic and their actions prove this to be an apt moniker.

In N American sports, sometimes the players take it to the fans instead :o

Anyways my original intent was to hilight the obvious trend the world over it seems- fans that really have no clue, nor real life outside of a small environment- in this case revolving around the toob, the local pitch and their local pub. Pathetic really, especially when it manifests itself in a disgusting display like the topic incident.

I love sports but I've never understood the small town type sports fan mentality.

For example- I flew to Calgary for a biz meeting and after an initial handshake, my counterpart said "YOU GUYS really took a beating last night huh?" with a sly grin. I had NO idea what he was on about??? Turns out HIS team beat 'my' team (I didn't know I had one;) (??) -or at least a team of players bought from around the world, representing "my" city (which has almost zero relevance for me).

I endured this school boy in a business suit for 3 days and he never stopped going on about this 'game' and how great "his" team was. I had dinner at his house and it looked like an adolescent shrine to HIS team... memorabilia everywhere- felt sorry for his wife n kids. The ONLY topic at dinner was how the boys should practise to be world class 'team' morons (imho) with emphasis on pure loathing for anyone not representative of "their" team- just like their Dad, essentially.

I'm sure his kids are grown up now and fine young men :D

Edit/ it probably shouldn't need pointing out, similar mentality (when taken to extremes) grows fanatics in all walks of life... including terrorists, or even a "yer either fer us or agin us" attitude from other quarters... :o

On occasions i've been accused of 'not being a team player' its invariably by people who are busy spending the entire travel and entertainment budget on themselves (and combining it with a holiday), or in repsonse to an enquiry why I am being seated next to the Khasis while they have an office with harbourfront view.

(So I suspect its them that are not the 'team player' and its simple transference taking place)

Perhpas I should explain to them that my actual problem is being anti-authority .....which is probably evenmore of a handicap.

Don't be too harsh on this kind of fella, B&S. Everyone has, or should say, most folks have a hobby, and that school boy in a business suit has a serious hobby. Part of doing business, right? What section of the newspaper does a Salesman turn to 1st & only? The Sports Section of course because who wants to start the day bummed out over all the bad news out there?

The small town sports mentality exists because, by definition, there ain't too much else to do in a small town except get into sports or hang out at Joes Bar (or both). :D

Fair comment BM but take a similar dynamic and expand the "small town" a bit further- Take any environment where sheer loathing of others who don't share your 'team' view is preached constantly and presto!

Eg, any American who isn't seen as pro-Dubya is portrayed as somehow un-American (?!) by the right :D Any Muslim, not seen as hating America, is judged as a traitor by rightist Jihadists. It's all the same dynamic really :o:D

On top of that, the whole 'ugly american' thing has spilled over to thailand within some of the farang community- Had a guy ask me after a biz meeting where I was from- Canada I replied- to his "That's a relief, didn't think you were a Yank" and then a smile :D Geez! Really unfair for all "Yanks" to be thought of with such disdain imho and gets my hackles up.

Meanwhile, back 'on topic', I note Vancouver's own (my team- apparently;) Todd Bertuzzi has been re-instated to play yesterday. Unfortunately, the guy he sucker punched (Moore) might be done :D No doubt the 'fans' will cheer good ol' Todd on- he's one of our 'own' afterall :D

I'm glad to see ice hockey back too. That is a serious sport in the area where I'm living right now - northern Minnesota. My wife and I try to get to at least a couple "Wild" games a season. To me, ice hockey is the best sporting event to view in person aside from Soccer games at Maricana Stadium in Rio which is a whole 'nother storey! :D

I barely miss hockey (played it as a young un tho;) but have to say, the Minnesota Wild lineup looks awright :D

Amazing place Minnie, swings from Jesse "The Body" VENTURA as Guv RIGHT to republican Tim Pawlenty, never a dull moment in Minnesota where the state bird is the Common Loon (Gavia immer) :D:D

Hope you all and The Wild have a good season ahead. Cheers! :D

Jesse Ventura (former Minnie Guv and 'pro' wrestler;)
