Gunman takes class hostage at Wisconsin high school

MARINETTE, WISCONSIN (BNO NEWS) -- An armed student took an unknown number of hostages at Marinette High School in Marinette, Wisconsin on late Monday afternoon, officials said.

An official with the Marinette County Emergency Management office said law enforcement agencies are at the scene since around 3.15 p.m. local time following a 911 call.

No other information was immediately available, but the Marinette County Emergency Management office scheduled a news conference for 6.30 p.m. local time.

MARINETTE - Several law enforcement agencies are on the scene at Marinette High School after an armed student took a classroom hostage Monday afternoon.

23 students and 1 teacher are being held hostage by a student with a handgun, according to Marinettee Police Chief Jeff Skorik.

Details of what is ongoing at the school currently are scarce, but a short news release was provided for parents:

"At 3:48 pm a call was received at Marinette County Communications/Dispatch from a Marinette High School administrator that there was an armed student holding a classroom hostage," Marinette County Emergency Management officer Kathy Frank said in the news release. "Police are on scene and no injuries are reported at this time."

"If your child attends Marinette High School and you do not know his/her whereabouts, please go to the Marinette County Courthouse Jury Assembly Room (located in the basement of the Annex)."

"Further information will be provided as the situation develops."

MARINETTE, Wis. (AP) — An armed student burst into a high school classroom in eastern Wisconsin on Monday, taking more than 20 students and a teacher hostage, authorities said.A Marinette High School administrator called authorities after 3 p.m. local time to say a student had taken over a classroom, officials said. Police Chief Jeff Skorik said authorities had been able to communicate with the teacher inside the classroom.

No injuries had been reported as of Monday evening and Skorik said no shots had been fired.

Skorik said 23 students were being held hostage in the classroom along with the teacher. He said police know the identity of the suspect and have contacted that student's family.

"We have no idea as far as motivations at this point," the chief said.

Choral teacher Bonita Weydt said she was talking with a teacher in another classroom after school, which lets out about 3:10 p.m., when principal Corry Lambie came in.

"I said, 'Corry, what's going on?' and he said, 'Get out of the building,'" Weydt said.

County emergency management director Eric Burmeister said parents were asked to gather at the county courthouse.

Marinette is about 50 miles north of Green Bay and sits on the border with Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The high school has an annual enrollment of approximately 800 students, according to its website

(CNN) -- All 24 hostages held captive by a hangun-toting student in northeast Wisconsin were freed Monday night, after several hours of being confined inside a high school classroom, police said.

Marinette Police Chief Jeffrey Skorik told reporters just before 8:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. ET) that the hostages -- 23 students and a female teacher -- were safe and would soon be reunited with their families.

Hostage-taker shoots self at Wisconsin school

A student armed with a handgun held nearly two dozen students and a teacher hostage in the Marinette, Wis., high school for about five hours before shooting himself when police broke into the classroom, authorities said Monday. No other injuries were reported.

Officers who were outside the Marinette High School classroom said they heard three gunshots shortly after 8 p.m. and broke through the door, said police Chief Jeff Skorik. The 15-year-old male gunman then shot himself.
