His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej: Father of the Thai Nation

December 5 each year, the birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, marks one of the most significant days for Thai people. The day, which is a public holiday, is also observed as Thailand’s National Day and National Father’s Day. Thai people celebrate this auspicious occasion on a grand scale to show gratitude to their beloved monarch.

His Majesty is regarded as the symbol of unity and social harmony in Thai society. The deep reverence felt by all Thais for their King is perhaps unique in the modern world. Each year on His Majesty’s birthday, festivities are held throughout the Kingdom; lights decorate households, government offices, public places, and private companies everywhere. The love, respect, homage, and joy pouring forth from Thai people to honor His Majesty are wonderful to see.

His Majesty is sometimes referred to by his subjects as Pho Luang, royal father. He has spent his life working for the benefit of his people, who are all his “children.” The close relationship between him and his subjects truly reflects the family tradition in Thai society. Everywhere he goes throughout Thailand, people have gathered to see him.

Since he is recognized as the “Father of the Thai Nation,” his birthday, December 5, was designated as Thailand’s National Father’s Day in 1980. The canna, or Buddha Raksa, in Thai is the symbol of Father’s Day in Thailand, just as jasmine, representing Mother’s Day on August 12. Buddha Raksa means the Buddha’s protection, which is very meaningful. Thai people are happy under the protection of His Majesty, whom they regard as their devoted father. His Majesty is regarded as the protector of his people in every respect, just like the meaning of Buddha Raksa.

Each year on National Father’s Day, a number of model fathers are named and presented with certificates and plaques of honor, in the same manner as that on National Mother’s Day, August 12, which is Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday, when a number of outstanding mothers are selected and honored.

From interviews given to the press on how to bring up their children, most model fathers attach the greatest importance to the teaching of their children to be good citizens. They also focus on teaching them to help themselves and allowing them to be themselves and take part in decision-making within the family. All of them said that they are happy and willing to support their children and ask nothing in return for their dedication.

His Majesty the King deserves to be called “paternal monarch” for his great devotion and unbounded love toward his subjects. The world’s longest reigning monarch, His Majesty is also respected internationally for his tireless devotion to bettering the lives of his people. Numerous projects have been initiated under his guidance. His mercy and merit which shower upon his people and those who need his protection and assistance have made their lives happy, secure, and peaceful.

A giant cake for Father's Day

By THE NATION ON SUNDAY

med_gallery_327_1086_12503.jpg

Loyal subjects in provinces in different regions celebrated His Majesty's 83rd birthday anniversary and Father's Day in different ways.

In Chon Buri's Pattaya province, a giant cake was made by local hotel chefs to mark the celebration. It was a vanilla-butter cake 149 metres in length.

The charity cake was divided into 5,999 small pieces. The price of each piece was Bt39. The amount earned from the cake will be given to charitable organisations for underprivileged children.

About 300 residents in Pattani province yesterday joined cycling and tree-planting activities to celebrate and honour the king. They planted trees at Somdet Phra Sri Nakarin Park, which was hit hard by rains early last month.

At the Internal Security Operations Command in Phetchaburi, local administrative organisations and people there have joined hands to build 84 check dams to reduce water flowing in brooks to ease drought.

Meanwhile, fishermen in Phang Nga province stopped catching marine animals from noon yesterday to noon today.

In Trang province, some 100 locals and highway officers cleaned up a main road and trimmed trees along both sides of the 27-kilometre long road.

At least 1,999,999 fish were released into the Nan River by locals in Uttaradit province, and one of its nine districts also released 9 million fish into water.

Big ya ba and marijuana busts

By THE NATION ON SUNDAY

Some 1.86 million methamphetamine tablets worth almost Bt500 million have been seized in an arrest in Uthai Thani.

The drug seizure and arrest of a Thai man at a checkpoint in Uthai Thani's Muang district on Friday night led to arrests of two more suspects yesterday in Bangkok and Ayutthaya, along with a kilogram of crystal meth.

As part of a big crackdown on drugs by police ahead of HM the King's birthday, checkpoints were set up all over country. One checkpoint on Uthai Thani-Krok Phra Road late on Friday found an Isuzu pickup carrying 1.86 million ya ba tablets.

The driver, Thanakorn Phad-thaisong, 29, was also caught with a pistol, ammunition and Bt226,830 in cash. He reportedly confessed to transporting the pills for a Bt100,000 payment.

On instructions from Police Region 6 chief Lt-General Ajin Chotiwong to arrest accomplices, police conducted a sting by getting the driver to go to drug delivery points in Bangkok and Ayutthaya.

At 4am yesterday, police arrested one suspect, Jakkarin Daosuk, 30, as well as seizing a kilogram of crystal meth worth Bt3 million, a pickup truck, a pistol and a shotgun. One more suspect, Wirat Wongrangrong, 25, was arrested along with a motorcycle and a 9mm pistol at 8.30am.

In a separate development, Border Patrol Police in Songkhla yesterday confiscated 500 kilograms of compressed marijuana worth more than Bt10 million in a sting that also nabbed suspected dealer Ron Wongroman, 63.

The man was first arrested in possession of 50 kg of marijuana he was handing to police who posed as buyers. A subsequent search of his house in Songkhla discovered 450 more kilograms of the illicit drug. Police said the marijuana was smuggled from Laos for users in the deep South and possible smuggling to Malaysia.

Security beefed up in deep South

Authorities have beefed up security, patrolling main roads round the clock to prevent possible insurgencies during the weekend and Father's Day.

Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Spokesman Colonel Banpot Poolpian said insurgents were trying to attack people and government officers when they travelled on the roads. So, authorities had to strengthen security measures to take care of people's safety when they travelled on the roads to join many activities held to celebrate the Father's Day.

"Our authorities conduct foot patrol all day long, while cars and motorcycles are used to patrol during rush hours in the mornings and evenings," he said.

He added that residents helped authorities in patrolling on smaller roads, which were in communities.

Man, 76, takes life

A 76-year-old disease-stricken father Saturday shot himself dead in Chainat's Muang district ahead of Father's Day Sunday.

Police said the deceased was a former policeman from Muang Chainat station, Police Sub-Lieutenant Payom Chubuppa. Police said they found a .38 revolver in his left hand.

Suwanpoj Chubuppa said his father Payom had suffered from spinal stenosis for years that caused his lower parts to be numb so he could not walk easily. He needed to take a urine bag with him and had had an operation two months ago.

He said his father, when asked previously why he kept the gun with him, he avoided answering the question. Suwanpoj said he had heard his dad saying his illness caused burden on his family.

Police believed he was stressed from his bad conditions caused by the disease, and might see himself as burden for his children and relatives. So, he decided to shoot himself.

Red show put off

Red shirt leader Sombat Boonngarm-anong said Saturday that he decided to cancel a political talk show due to take place today, after pressure from the authorities. But he would continue a second talk tomorrow at Imperial World shopping mall in Lat Phrao.

Sombat said the Centre for Resolution of the Emergency Situation pressed for him to cancel the first talk show by arguing that while it was not unlawful, it was inappropriate. "When the CRES said they cannot allow it, I am pleased to cancel the event on December 5," he said yesterday, adding that those who bought tickets would get refunds, he said.
