Awesome New Vietnamese Restaurant

Featured Replies

I tried the P. Klang location (south side) last week, nothing Vietnamese about it, the Thai food is nothing special with the exception of their fried Squid: great flavor, good portion and terrific light fish & chip style batter. Almost across from the Flying Veg resto (north side) which has delicious fried duck with fresh garlic & black pepper, the best duck dish I've ever tasted aside from Peking duck.

As I say, each to his own. I live near the Flying Vegetable and having read your recommendation I thought I should give them another try, so I went down there just now.

It's a big menu and I couldn't locate "fried duck with fresh garlic & black pepper" on it. Fried duck with garlic OR fried duck with black pepper, but not both.

I ordered the duck and garlic and, sorry, even though I was hungry I was really quite disappointed. Deep-fried duck meat and a load of garlic piled on top. I didn't finish it.

They have a huge menu - which I tend to think is never a good thing. And they had on a telly so the restaurant area was quite noisy.

For Thai food in a relatively upmarket setting, give me Mair-Sri-Ruan (or Mae Sri Ruen) any time. A relatively small menu, done well, presented in quiet surroundings.

Off topic but there is also a MaiSriuen at the corner of the Theppasit Rd and Sukhumvit right at the Theppasit Rd entrance to the outlet mall...plenty of parking and food is consistent...we like it for lunch

Surprised at the lack of knowledge on Mae Sri Ruen.

Many outlets around Thailand nowadays but Mae Sri Ruan started in Pattaya over 50 years ago.

The Pattaya Glang branch has probably been open over 30 years.

Mair-Sri-Ruan? Where is that? Is their nem neung fermented?

I know of two Mair Sri Ruan restaurants in Pattaya. One is at Big C 'Central Centre' on Second Road. The other is just round the corner from Porn Namg Neung. It's on Pattayaklang, about 50 yards east of the Third Road / Pattayaklang crossroads, on the south side of Pattayklang. Opposite the Flying Vegetable restaurant.

The Mair Sri Ruan restaurants basically serve Thai food. Nicely prepared, in pleasant surroundings. I would recomments their laab muu. However they also serve nairm neuang. And it's better (especially the pork balls and the spicy sauce parts) than Porn Namg Neung's. About the same size portion and about the same price, the last time I looked.

Fermentation? I know nothing!

Clarification/Error:

From the previous poster I now know I am referring to a different restaurant in the review above. This resto (with the good squid) is across the street and slightly east of the Flying Veg rest. The Mair Sri Ruan rest. is 100m west of my reviewed restaurant, very close to 3rd road.

I have only been to Mair S.R once, have wanted to go back but it closes early so never get the chance.

It's roast duck that is then stirfried, not deep fried. Like I said, best to pick out the garlic and peppercorn branches, it's only for flavor, still loads of veg left on the plate. Perhaps it is an acquired taste. I would try your preferred place but (like the Boat rest.) it's closing hour is not Falang friendly.

I think their hours are 9am to 9pm now (in the past they used to close by 5pm).

They recently refurbished. Now they have aircon and higher prices!

Variety is the spice of life

And now Pattaya has as excellent affordable Vietnamese Restaurant.

Food is super fresh and well priced , lovely staff (one very attractive owner who speaks good english) and highly recommended.

Just past the new TOT building on 3rd Road (same side) heading towards Nakula - small map enclosed to give a general idea with my English additions.

Look forward to some other members opinions (insert Jingthing)

I ate here this evening, busier than usual, very good as usual (if your not expecting Pho). Open for Songkran thus far and no signs of water tossing on this end of 3'rd road.

Are there more often opened than the Hong kong style Chinese restaurant Pao ?

Is it the only Vietnamese restaurant in Pattaya ?

But their Nem nuang is not as good as the real one from the famous restaurant at NONG KHAI ?

Thanks.

1. Yes.

2. No.

3. Probably not as good because it's not that good!

I tried it !

This restaurant is one of the best Vietnamese that I tried in Thailand + prices are cheap.

I do not understand what you don't like as all the dishes exactly have the taste that they should have, NEM NUANG included.

Also all the people working there are friendly and it's very clean. A new reason to forget the always closed Hong Kong food where I never got a smile.

The main reason I don't like it is because it is Thai style Vietnamese food and I much prefer Vietnamese style Vietnamese food.

I go to Vietnam every year. I haven't found any decent Viet food in Pattaya, or BKK for that matter.

There just ain't any Viets here. Don't expect Thais to do it right.

The Saigon Bistro on the 6th floor of Central now has a daily all you can eat menu for 200 baht net including drinks/dessert. From 2-6pm.

The salad rolls and BBQ pork sandwiches were eaten in multiples. I would recommend skipping the soups if into buffet.

Yes but not daily. It is Monday through Friday.

Saigon Bistro. Good food. Weird vibe for me because of the hideous loud bad music and very gay staff. (Not that there is anything wrong with that. )

Staff not so very gay really. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

I went there a few nights ago, never again.

Had a spicy ham salad, it was floating in lemon juice to the point we didn't eat it.

Had some cold prawn rolls, only full of lettuce with 2 pieces of carrot & cucumber inside,

Had fried rice, this was ok.

Had takeaway Nam Nueng, just ok, had much better in many places.

The restaurant itself is ok, nice surrounds & good staff, attentive & priced ok.

I am not that fussy, just didn't like it.
