Person In Nong Pla Lai Prison

Recommended Posts

Hello

A person I know has become an unvoluntary resident at Nong Pla Lai prison.

I would like to know if that person is ok, what the sentence is, when the person can come out on parole, etc.

Are there organisations or people visiting Nong Pla Lai who can visit the inmate and ask for information?

Why should I contact for that?

Thank you

Why not take a Thai with you and go visit the detainee yourself and get the information first hand? You need a Thai to fill out forms and provide identification. I've been told you should take your passport with you, but I never have been asked for it. The Thai's ID is sufficient to get a cue number. There usually is no problem for friends and family to visit detainees for about 15 minutes.

I'm sure your friend would also appreciate a visit from you. It would also be well appreciated by the detainee, if you bought to personal supplies through the prison and provide some money. The prison does not provide any personal items for free. From what I've seen the supplies they sell are very reasonably priced. Don't bring any gifts as the prison usually does not accept gifts for the detainees.

There are long queues to visit the inmates and purchase supplies, so I recommend you go early to avoid the lunch breaks, and to be able to visit the inmate before visiting hours terminate.

If he's a UK XPAT, visit the British consulate in Jomptien, near the Thai Immigration offices and they'll be able to help I'm sure.

Yes, The Honorary Consul (Office at Jomtien Soi 5) has a responsibly to check the welfare of British persons detained, but unless you are immediate family will probably tell you nothing.

I know most people are looked up for good reason but to be looked up in a foreign country could be almost like solitary confinement, so if you have time I think he would appreciate a visit.

There is no gate. You might be able to turn them in at the office. Be careful, pornographic materials are illegal in Thailand. I believe it's open every day, 8:30am to 4pm. It's a prison, why would they not be open everyday? Bring a Thai unless you can speak Thai. They speak English, little bit.

the person's not an expat - Thai.

just want to check its well-being.

It doesn't matter if the person is a Thai or Expat. You can still visit them.. The procedure is the same. In the times that I went, I visited both Thais and Laotians, both male and female. I didn't have a problem with any of my visits. A Thai would definitely want you to visit them. If it's a female, she would want you to purchase a sleeping mat, underwear, slippers, a towel, rs, T-shirt, a Thai sarong (wrap around used for bathing), laundry soap, bathing soap, hair shampoo, toothbrush, tooth paste, deodorant, mama (Thai instant noodles, the prison provides them with hot water), drinking water, soya or UHT milk, and etc. A male would want cigarettes (they can barter with them if they don't smoke), a sleeping mat, a towel, undershorts, laundry soap, bathing soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, mama, drinking water, soya or UHT milk, and etc.

I've been told, the prison only provides a bowl of rice and bathing water. So they are usually pretty hungry.and thirsty. I've noticed that they usually lose a lot of weight. I've also been told the cells are packed, there are a lot of people in one cell, and they sleep on a cement floor (the reason for the mat), shoulder to shoulder. Both would like you to deposit money to their account. Prior to you going into the visiting room, you can get an order form and ask them what they want. The form is in both English and Thai. It also has the prices printed on the form. When you finish the visit, you can submit the form, pay for the goods, and deposit money to their account. If they aren't able to post bail, the are usually there for at least 1 month waiting for the case to come to court. So a visit once a week would be well appreciated.

When you go to visit, take your own pen! The prison doesn't provide any for filling out the forms. Good luck trying to borrow one especially when you are in the visiting room. Also take some paper, sometimes the order forms run out because the Thais take them to make notes.

Since it appears that you have not visited the prison before, you should definitely go visit. It makes for a very interesting outing. Plan on at least 2 to 3 hours. Add an hour if you get stuck there during the lunch break. Usually if you arrive after 2 pm, you won't have time to visit and will have to go back another day. Listen very closely for the inmate's name to be called. The announcements are very difficult to understand, they use the prisoner's legal name (another reason you should take a Thai with you). If you miss the call, the inmate is sent back to the cell. It's quite a process to get back on the queue list. I've done that one before. They usually post a number at the guards desk of the current queue group. You can use that to roughly judge where you are in the queue. The benches are hard and uncomfortable in the waiting area. The noise from the people and TV are deafening, so I usually walk around the area a bit.

In your case, I suggest you and your TFG go to the office next to the waiting area. Even if you were to visit someone, you wouldn't be able to give the mags to them. The is no direct contact with the detainees. When you visit someone, you view them through a Plexiglas panel and speak to them through holes in the counter below the panel. If you were to speak to the officers in the office, I'm suspect you wouldn't have a problem donating them to the woman's cell. They probably would be appreciated. The girls do get pretty bored. The officers in the office seem to come in late, have long lunches, and leave early. I wouldn't go before 9am, from 11am to 1pm, or after 3pm.

Good luck!
