Right next to Platinum Mall there's nothing noteworthy. Platinum has it's own food center, not bad and cheap.

Best Thai restaurants nearby are, IMO, Aroy, on Phetburi Rd near Soi 20, and Once Upon A Time in a 60-year-old teak house on Soi 17.

I agree with Spolia. There's nothing at all nearby worthwhile. However, don't be afraid to jump in a taxi and go just a few minutes to Ratchatewi, lots of outdoor thai restaurants there that are good.

Food court at Platinum always works for me when I am in the area, but certainly not the dining experience you may wish for to impress the family!

Please let us know where you chose and how it went.

Where you're staying can be extremely difficult to get anywhere with the traffic etc.., and there are not any good restaurant districts within walking distance. Your best bet would be to jump in a taxi (or two) outside your hotel, and have them take you to Siam Square. That is not far (5-10 mins in light traffic, 20 in heavy), and in the same direction as the traffic flow, with only one left turn at Phayathai road. At Siam Square there are loads of restaurants to choose from, and you didn't mention if you have any Thai speakers in your group, but Siam Sq. is a well known shopping/ tourist area so English no problem. One "authentic" Thai restaurant you could try there is ban khun mae (bankhunmaedotcom) . It's more expensive than some, but not terribly so (350/baht/pax set menu), and the taxi could take you directly there as you say you have older people with you. DO not ask taxis for good Thai restaurants, as you will inevitably end up at rip off seafood joints.

Going out the front of Grand Diamond, turn left towards Pantip Plaza. There will be a side soi, actually more an alleyway almost immediately on your left that has some very good street food.

One of my favorite street food restaurants is on Ratchadamron on the sidewalk on same side as Central World just before you get there coming from Grand Diamond It usually opens around 5 and is always crowded with Thais. Great grilled salted fish (Plah Khow)B120 for a large one. Good Gai Yang (grilled chicken) as well as many Isan specialties such as Nam Tok Moo (Pork with spicy veggies and mint)and of course; Som Tham, the spicy pappaya salad that fuels most Thais.

There are many more items to chose from, very reasonable prices.

The tables are community style; it's almost impossible to eat there and not meet people.
