Where Can I Find Farang Friends Living In Bangkok?

Featured Replies

Hi,

The topic title is pretty self explanatory. Where does one start to find fellow farangs living in Bangkok? I'm not really the kind of guy that approaches random strangers at a pub, club, or other social venue alone. I would however like to meet some of you. Anybody willing to?:whistling:

start with your interests and you will find like minded people.

Mine: Heineken in larger quantities

Found: Other Farangs that like beer too

Thanks, you both said the "how", what about the "where"?

Google "expat clubs" Amcham bkk etc ...

There are also occasional TVF pissups/gatherings. Hang out in places that interest you and give the rare smile and nod.

However, if you are really a social misfit that can't doesn't approach strangers then you will indeed find it difficult to make new friends. Thailand tends to isolate people that are easily isolated.

One of the things you might do is go to a language school and start learning Thai. You will, of course, meet other foreigners there.

I'm not really a social misfit, just want someone to come along. Sofar, you people here appear to be ok. So, is there any chance one of you knows some people around my age (early to mid 20s) that will accompany me?

So my age is early to mid forties however if you like women your age, we have something in common ;)

Depending on your gender, this is either creepy or funny. Needn't be females, guys will do just as well.

I think their is a Boystown in Patpong I'm sure you will meet some nice friendly Farang there.

Erm... I'm not interested in those kind of "boys". If you know what I mean...

Well mate, sorry for thinking my name and the picture on my avatar of my mrs and son would be make it obvious for some, guess it comes with age. ;)

You'll have to forgive us here mate, we love a good leg-pull (don't go there fellow TVers!).

Try the various pubs and be social, this link might help: http://www.1stopbang...itality/bars_2/ and obviously pop in to any pub/bar that you're passing and strike up a conversation.

Cheers! :burp:

So... will anyone hold my hand and accompany little old me? We needn't hold pinkies.. unless you want too...

PS. I'll pay for the beer, surely there is no man who can resist free beer! :burp:

Needn't hold pinkies, unless you want to?

That worries me. What you implying young buck.

Try the Crossbar Suk Soi 23. Usually a friendly crowd......don't forget to leave one in for me. ;)

The Sportsman in Washington Square is a nice place. Try the Penalty Spot between 31 and 29 as well. Other than that: Nana and Soi Cowboy always seems to be full of us.

Hey, that's just 1 Soi away from my place! Send me a PM if you're serious.

The big city can be a lonely place for farangs... It can be tricky not meeting tourists and, well, lets say strange people. There are alot of strange farangs in Bangkok that you would not want to get to know, with dubious backgrounds. Then there are all the younger English teachers, inexperienced who seem to be finding their way in life, not being sure if they are going to stay or return back home. Its definitely a difficult place to make good friends. Thus I think you are rather brave posting a topic on it. Well done!

What do you mean by "strange, dubious people"?

Younger English teachers seems like a good start, though last time I checked (for learning to read and write Thai) prices were way too high to join.

I guess a good start would be to teach a foreign language myself, since I'm fluent in four, but (not to derail the topic): how much minimum time would you say they expect? (I have a job and I don't know if something like that would fit into my schedule)

Stan you seem like a nice bloke and I would think you will have little if any problems hooking up with decent farang, as the other guys have said, try a Thai language class or one of the many farang type bars..i.e. Bully's just near Nana plaza, The Crossbar in suk23 ( if you wanna get bored )

the Aussie bar in suk 11 +ROCKS+ also Bradmans on suk 23, another great place is Country Road at the Asoke end of Soi Cowboy, free pool till 6.00pm and happy hour till 9.00pm, ( you might even find me in there ) good luck and welcome to Bangkok

Stick to beers at Country Road....they have a habit of using cheap local spirits wherever they can. Bab bad hangovers....:o

I had a Jägermeister in there once and it tasted a little off, of course by the time I'd tasted it, I'd finished it but I didn't buy another.

I know where you're coming from OP.

You will easily find people to hook up with, but long term decent friends are very hard to find here. Unfortunately, i've noticed a lot of farangs are sometimes overly cautious, to the point of being paranoid, about other farangs motives and the scenario of someone pulling a scam on you. It makes it hard to connect sometimes.

Sometimes you will meet people who will soon ask you for a loan of money, coming up with various hard luck stories, and other times you might meet what you think are decent lads, but whom seem to have little time to socialise.

I have heard that there is a good group of farangs here called the "hash harriers" who have days out, hiking, and do various activities. I've never looked into myself, so i can't offer any solid advice about them, but i have heard good things about them. Maybe some other TV members can comment?

As for me, i am probably 20 years older than you, and can't stand loud house music and most of the things you younger generation think are "sanook" bore me a tad.

SO, i doubt you'd get much benefit from befriending me..you'd probably think im a wet blanket B)

good luck anyway ;)

Country Road... isn't that in Soi Cowboy? You know... where "those" kind of people hang out?

That's new, I've only heard of farangs being scammed, not scamming. Well except for those shady guys you read about in the papers. The becoming a loanshark who'll lend money with huge interest rates and break your fingers if you don't pay up seems tempting, but I think I'll pass :vampire:

Stan,

I know you said you were not into running but the Hash is still meeting regularly, Many expats, beer and edgy humour?

Hi Stan

maybe if you told people of your interests you might get people a bit more willing to meet up, not sure age has got much to do with things out here
