Chalerm Opts Out Of Censure Debate

Has he changed his mind yet?

Surely that won't happen, until his departure has been confirmed, by Noppadon. B)

You don't honestly think that he will leave by himself? All these MP's "Control" a number of other MPs. If Charlerm leaves he will take 20+ MPs with him. How is that not bad for Thaksin and PTP?

Don't know exactly how many Chalerm has but fairly certain it's not even as many as twenty. And as he could potentially hinder more than help them in the election, doubt it'll make the difference you think it will.

It can hardly add to the PTP-vote, any more than the departure of the 'Friends of Newin' group did, and may also encourage other factions to consider their futures inside the crumbling-PTP. :ermm: Squeak, squeak, squeak !

Or should that be 'grunt, grunt', as their chances at the feeding-trough appear to diminish, with every departure ? <_<

Chalerm is nowhere near as crucial a player as Newin. He's got nothing like the electoral base, the support from other MPs or the funding. Check out the article in the other paper. He expects to win five MPs. The only real blow is that Chalerm is excellent within parliament.

First let's see if he leaves, then let's see if he only pulls 5 or if he pulls 10 as I suspect he might. To speculate about his bankroll in this year's elections is a bit premature. If he has made a clean break from PTP he might get money from unexpected sources.

Pheu Thai MP Sets Conditions for Staying with Party

The opposition Pheu Thai Party MP Chief asks for three months to decide whether to leave the Party after submitting his conditions for the Party's consideration.

He also claims not to feel disappointed for not being chosen to lead the upcoming censure debate.

Opposition Pheu Thai Party MP Chief Chalerm Yoobamrung said he is contemplating resignation from the Party and requested three months to make the decision while waiting for the Party's say on his submitted conditions.

Chalerm's proposal contains three conditions that Pheu Thai Party de facto leader Thaksin Shinawatra must be the selling point of the election campaign, more importance must be placed on campaigning in Bangkok, and Party policies must be reconsidered, particularly towards censure debates.

If the Party does not agree with his conditions, Chalerm said he will leave Pheu Thai Party and establish a new political party.

The Pheu Thai Party MP Chief also stated that he does not feel slighted for not being chosen to lead the censure debate.

Chalerm believes if Party-list MP Mingkwan Saengsuwan leads the censure debate, he will not be successful in grilling Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Nonetheless, Chalerm has considered naming his political party the New Alternative Party with policies aiming to reduce conflicts and to work towards reconciliation.

The Pheu Thai Party MP Chief is considering inviting former massage parlor tycoon Chuvit Kamolvisit and columnist Nitiphum Navarat to join the his Party since the two were popular candidates during the Bangkok governor election.

Meanwhile, Deputy PM Suthep Thaugsuban declined to comment on Chalerm's skipping of the upcoming censure debate, saying the decision is an internal affair of the party.

The deputy premier said the importance of a censure debate lies not with the individuals taking the House floor, but with information on the flaws in public administration.

This last is Chalerm demanding an offer he can't refuse.

And point one makes perfectly clear where this is aimed.

Pay me, reward me, give me face,

or I will pull a 'bigger Newin' on your bossy ass.

3 months to decide if the attack dog is worth the bucks win or lose.

The alternative is lose bigger, because yet another faction has gone walkabout,

Promote Thaksin - Chalerm issues ultimatum to party

Outspoken Pheu Thai MP Chalerm Yoobamrung has given an ultimatum to the opposition party, saying he will quit and set up a new party if his proposals - which include promoting ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra during the election - are rejected.

Chalerm said he planned to invite sharp-tongued politician Chuwit Kamolvisit and Nitipoom Navaratna to join the party.

He has demanded that Pheu Thai promote the fugitive former premier in the poll, and change its policies, especially for Bangkok, where he will run in the election.

He said he had spoken out because many Pheu Thai MPs disagreed with his idea to continue to promote Thaksin as a selling point for the party. Indeed, he was ignored and mocked by some party MPs.

He said some supporters of Mingkwan Sangsuwan, who is expected to lead the upcoming censure debate, sneered and said the debate could not be "fierce like before".

"Today, when we have different opinions, I have to speak out. When the party members say they won't promote Thaksin, then who will they promote to win the election? Nobody's in good shape, neither am I. I am blamed as loving my sons too much," he said.

Chalerm spoke before the start of his eldest son's wedding party yesterday, and said none of his three boys - who have been involved in a series of highly controversial dramas - would stand in the election.

"If I am to stay in politics I must set up a new party. But whether the story will go that far, I have to wait and see the party's reaction first."

He said he would decide in three months on whether there was enough time to prepare for a change before the election.

He planned to name the new party the New Alternative Party. He said he still respected and was friendly with Thaksin.

Chalerm said on Monday he would opt out if Pheu Thai's censure debate was led by his rival Mingkwan.

Chalerm, who has led censure debates many times, said this was because Mingkwan's style was too soft. He said Mingkwan should tell his supporters to stop attacking him.

At the wedding, Mingkwan told the media he did not have any conflict with Chalerm. But he walked away and did not respond when asked if he had paid some Pheu Thai MPs to support him, as claimed, and if he was ready to accept the position of alternate premier to Abhisit Vejjajiva in the censure debate.

The Chairman of Pheu Thai's Bangkok MPs, Vicharn Minchainant, said Chalerm should discuss the issue in a party meeting.

Chalerm had proposed dividing Bangkok into three zones when selecting the party's candidates. However, the meeting resolved not to do this, as all candidates needed to be backed by party executives, Vicharn said.

He denied that former Thai Rak Thai Party executive Sudarat Keyuraphan, who is serving a five-year ban from politics like many former TRT executives, influenced the selection.

Vicharn said Chalerm never said clearly whether his son would be a candidate or if he wanted to propose himself as a selector of candidates for the party.

Pheu Thai MP Jatuporn Promphan said Chalerm and Mingkwan's different opinions showed the beauty of democracy.

There was no rift in the party, he said, but it had not met to finalise plans for the censure debate, including the topics, speakers and schedule.

"Anyway, Chalerm must join in the censure debate. But so far we haven't met to pick the date and the list of speakers," the MP said.

"Mingkwan also has to prepare well as this is the last censure debate [in this government's term]. Although Chalerm has said he won't take part, we have to talk, just the way we have to ask General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh to run in the next election," Jatuporn said.

Chavalit told a Japanese diplomat on Monday he would not run in the next election.

Chalerm expected to leave Pheu Thai due to disappointment at not being made leader; expected to set up new party with Chuwit Kamolvisit /TAN_Network

I'd say that they deserve each other. It would be a kindness to Thailand and the majority of its peoples if the lawmakers operated with the existing laws.

Chalerm is leaving? I bet some guy in Montenegro (or Dubai, or HK or .....) is asking himself "Don't any of these guys STAY bought?"

Alternatively, maybe they were never bought in the first place, and were just allies who saw new horizons. But I'm speculating, just like you always do. But I'm not presenting my speculation as fact ;) .

Chalerm shares a lot in common with Thaksin still. One of the areas they agree on is no confidence in Mingkwan.

Interesting article in the other paper which indicates that Thaksin is only reciprocating on Mingkwan by acknowledging Mingkwan's own financial contributions to the Pheu Thai Party.

It's also apparently a set up for failure as he has assigned Mingkwan to lead the censure debate and he has zero prior experience with that.

With this expected task failure, Thaksin will then shift his support to a new Party Leader, the one he has apparently wanted all along...

his younger sister, Yingluk Shinawatra;

who the sources said is expected to become Party Leader before the next general election.

He might do that if any one at Pheu Thai Party had a clue as to when that meeting might take place... presumably it will be at some point this year, preferably before the elections.

The Pheu Thai Party Spokesman Prompong said yesterday the plans for the censure debate will be announced tomorrow.

It will include details such as when they plan to submit the no-confidence initiative, who will lead the debate (although Thaksin has already said it will be Mingkwan), which MP's will join in, and who in the government the debate will center on.

As required, the plans will also include the name of who the Pheu Thai Party will nominate to become Prime Minister if the the government fails in the no-confidence vote.

Whoopsies... the PTP disunity rolls on..

Prompong announced late this afternoon that the planned meeting of MP's to announce their Leader of the Censure Debate and their PM candidate scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed.

It will be held on a, as yet, undetermined date.

Interesting speculation. In which case he has stayed loyal to TRT/Thaksin for a decade, for little or no reward, now does that seem likely in the murky world of Thai party-politics ? It would make Chalerm a saint !

More-likely he's just setting-out his price for staying on-side & on-message. And introducing a 3-month deadline to keep the pressure on. <_<

Or maybe (more speculation by me) PT In Thailand have belatedly realised what Newin realised a while back?

He planned to name the new party the New Alternative Party.

Not much in terms of originality from the former Deputy Party Leader of the New Aspiration Party.

Chalerm spoke before the start of his eldest son's wedding party yesterday

His eldest son is the now-resigned, former Police Sub-Lieutenant Arthan, who was implicated in his brother Duangchalerm's murder charge as an accessory.

In addition to Mingkwan attending the wedding was Yingluck Shinawatra who expressed her desire that Chalerm not leave Pheu Thai Party.

The usual obsequious back slapping and oral worship of each other by the elite as Mingkwan, Yingluck and Chalerm do a love in. If you have ever seen this in real life and up close you will know it is even more sickening than can possibly be described in words. We can only await the day when a small super rich elite who can do anything they want dont run everything in the country

It reminds me of any number of Mafia weddings in the movies.

The movers/shakers sit at tables and the underlings line up to pay homage, and deliver veiled messages.

It becomes a neutral place for discussion between the Consiglieries and Capos for the big leaders.

Can't be seen going or coming from a rendezvous, but a wedding invite opens the doors to 'face not lost'

while discussions are held. And of course, even those you hate MUST be invited if they are powerful enough.

And also, of course, the hatred, distrust and naked greed

are thinly disguised and simmering under the table cloth.

Minor correction, dear chap. There is no indication that the PTP distances itself. If many PTP MP's disagree, some PTP MP's ignore then you should also say "indicate some in PTP at last trying to distance themselves...".

You're quite right old chap. How about this:

"some PTP members would like to distance the PTP from Thaksin. The presence of such PTP members has either not been recorded in the past or their numbers were less significant since attention wasn't brought to them in this way before. This suggests that a desire to distance itself from Thaksin is either a new or growing sentiment among PTP members. At last."

Feel free to propose corrections if necessary. I'm ready to redraft it if required.

Who knows what is happening in PTP but it is quite likely Chalerm is right now playing a gambit of dropping the big mans name so instead of being left out in the cold he is reembraced as say a deputy leader (which is what he said he could be yesterday). Chalerm wont be leader. His announced policy will drive away PTP MPs who have to compete in areas where Thaksin is a liability. Balancing that party right now is difficult. PTP will and is about Thaksin but it may end up being the ones if any who leave who are not.

The Mingkwanites are the group looking further ahead who could see life without Thaksin but maybe not in the short term. However, putting a flake and political disaster like Mingkwan in charge of any party is going to be a silly idea although maybe fun for us.

It may just be that Thaksin is planning on not winning the next election as the best policy. Losing and accepting it may be the quickest way in from the cold right now, and also the easiest and least costly in all ways. And of course if Thaksin's organ loses the election then his spell is seemingly gone. Then of course another bogeyman arises. A smaller PTP could yet end up as part of a government without the big position

It isnt that Thaksin is the great bogeyman so much as that he is:

1. The only leader who can hold most of PTP together

2. A significant vote getter by both fair and foul means

3. The only person that can actually agree to reconcilliation and end most opposition

4. The one who can shut down the armed red wing

No other PTP/red leader can do any of this

^ excellent as per usual.

Someone was asking in one of the Chalerm thread's about all his money with him being only a police captain.

Found this out about him that I didn't know previously. It was gambling by the policeman that certainly didn't hurt his net worth.

Phnom Penh intelligence agents are keeping close tabs on MP Chalerm Yoobamrung - who reportedly just won more than Bt30 million at casinos in Poi Pet last week - and his two eldest sons.

They are also on the lookout for his youngest son, fugitive murder suspect Duangchalerm.

Pheu Thai Big Gun Denies Quitting Party

The opposition Pheu Thai Party's Chief MP has dismissed speculations on his resignation from the party, but admitted discussing with another politician possibly forming of a new party.

Meanwhile, a senior opposition MP wishes Chalerm would attend the upcoming censure debate.

Politicians from both the government coalition and the opposition bloc last night gathered at the wedding of Arthan Yoobamrung, son of Pheu Thai Party Chief MP Chalerm Yoobamrung, at Centara Grand Hotel to wish the couple blessings and congratulate them.

However, all eyes were trained on senior Pheu Thai MP Mingkwan Saengsuwan, who is one of the favorites to become the next Party Leader and whose name has been proposed as the next premier in the upcoming censure debate.

Mingkwan told the press that he was unaware that Chalerm will not attend the censure debate if Mingkwan is nominated as prime ministerial candidate.

He affirmed no personal conflict with Chalerm.

If the Pheu Thai Party chooses him to lead the censure debate, Mingkwan said he wished that Chalerm would attend the debate since he is a veteran and experienced politician.

On the other hand, Chalerm dismissed speculations on his exit from the party, claiming that the press had misunderstood the issue as he is prepared to help the party in the upcoming censure debate.

However, he admitted to have been contacted by former Chat Thai MP Chuvit Kamolvisit to form a new political party which he believes will be successful in Bangkok constituencies due to Chuvit's popularity in the capital.

When asked about politics, Chuvit said he was putting aside politics for a while, but would return to it in the future.

Chuvit gave a small statement that he and Chalerm can definitely work together, but will talk about the issue at the right time.

Meanwhile, sister of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinwatra, Yingluk Shinawatra, who also attended the wedding, jokingly said she would go storm Chalerm's house if he would leave the party.

Chalerm then assured he will be staying with Pheu Thai Party.
