Update re: Sek Loso concert. (see post #150)

November 1: Sek Loso Concert @ Mazda Field (Phang Nga Rd, near Sea Horse Circle), 7:30pm.

Tickets 380 baht.)

I just called the sponsor ArrowMedia and they said that it is still on.

They don't know what happened to all the signs that had been put up advertising it.

The backup acts are: Neng (Y Not 7), Bae (I Rock) and Gop (Taxi).

We must be living in a golden age for Thai solo acts.

My wife tells me they are all legitimate stars in the Thai rock constellation.

December 5: "Food & Home For Monkey Park @ Phuket Project"

Despite the date, this is actually an ongoing project to help plant more trees up on Khao Toh Seh Park in Rassada (the one with all the TV broadcast antenna).

They are starting today by putting up ropes to allow people to access some of the steeper sections where the seedlings will be planted, mostly between viewpoints 5&6.

The name of the project in Thai differs radically from the English, simply stating that it is a tree planting project in honor of HM The King's birthday on December 5.

Groups involved are the OrBorJor, Satree Phuket School, the television stations with facilities on the hill, the Khao Toh Seh Hillwalkers Association, and the Monkey Feeding Group, which I never before knew existed.

Contact Ko Nong for more info @ 081-5389659 on how to purchase a seedling or larger tree.

8 -17 November Phuket City Loy Kratong Festival @ Central Stage Area Sapahn Hin

I went last night and there was lots going on: lots of stuff for the kids, food, live bands, stuff for sale of every description, (lots of plants) and lots of cute girls. Beer sponsor is Chang, but other brands are available.

The kids rides look pretty rickety and dangerous to me, except for the trampoline which is really one of the safest I have seen at an event like this.

This seems like pretty much one of your run-of-the-mill, anything goes events that will be a success if the nice weather holds.

There are different bands every night, but none that I had heard of before.

December 1: "Phuket Old Town Run 2" (The

2nd Annual Ban Bangneaw School Fun Run (4k) and Minimarathon (10k))

I'll first note for the record that it is sacrilege to call a 10k race a minimarathon.

Anyway, it starts and finishes at Ban Bangneaw School on Phuket Road, near the library, at 6am

The fun run course just goes down around Saphan Hin and back.

The longer one covers much of Phuket Town, the longer goes all around old Phuket Town.

Headstart and BanBangneaw School are among the sponsors.

Trophies to the winners.

Sign up in advance at the school

November 22: Nang Nong Diao Concert & Puppet Show @ Mazda Field

(Off Phang Nga Road, behind Mazda dealership)

A 'look thung' (Thai country) style concert by Thailand's most famous blind singer, who used to accompany Ekachai Sirichai and is now out on his own.

He will be accompanied by scores of fully-festooned dancing woman dancing along; might be a good way to introduce friends to real Thai entertainment...

There will also be a classical Southern Thai Shadow Puppet show

No mention of cost, promoter or even the exact starting time on the poster, but shows there usually get going around 8pm

Sunday Nov. 17th. (TODAY) Phuket’s Filipino community to hold Typhoon Haiyan fundraiser -

Sharmane German is a Phuket-based Filipino helping to promote the event, which will start at 1pm with the regular basketball league, with bands and musicians performing in the breaks and after the tournament.

“People can donate money and goods. We cannot accept noodles and rice because there’s no water in the area. We are asking for bottled water, clothes, towels and blankets,” Sharmane said.

“Money is important, but there is a shortage of goods too, like food and clothes. There is no electricity or shelter.”

The event will be held at the Saphan Hin basketball court, opposite the swimming pool.

Sharmane is working together with fellow Filipino Johanna Benares, who is also collecting items, and these will be sent to the Philippines via courier in the next few days.

There are now a large number of collection points around the island, and these are listed on the “Phuket New Era Expats” Facebook page.

Phuket International Kindergarten and School in Chalong is also collecting donations and on Thursday (November 21) at 3.30pm will hold a mini market at the school, including a bake sale and arts and crafts.

December 12 - 18: 17th Andaman Auto Show

A good chance to check out the cars and some pretty, photogenic girls

at Central Festival. Recommended if you have nothing better to do and can find parking.

December 13 (Friday): Concert by Dej Issara and his band

at "Camp Cowboy" pub on Surin Road, south of Seahorse Circle (wongwien nimitr). I would not expect to see many farangs there. For more info call the numbers on the poster, but they didn't answer when I called. Maybe they sleep in on Sundays.

December 22: "Life Saving Ceremony for 22 Oxen" @ Saphan Hin (on the little beach near the beach volleyball courts

8:30 am to 11am

They have held this several years now, always asking in advance for cash donations to be brought on the day of the release. It says it is sponsored by the "Phuket Dharma Practice Center". (my translation) Those who donate in 'saving' the lives of these condemned cattle are promised a long list of personal benefits, including good health, long life, charisma...

They will also dump scores of fish fry, 'numbering one million' into the toxic stew that is what has become of Phuket Bay...good luck to them. They passed out brochures with donation envelopes to all the kids at my daughters' school...she got a good lesson in skepticism out of it...

I told her I I would consider donating when the request for funds came with a welfare status report on the cattle "saved" in previous ceremonies.

January 25 - 28: Phuket Local Food Fair

At Sapan Hin Central Stage Area

January 24 will feature the world's largest bowl of "Tubo", a locally popular sweet of beans, taro and other ingredients in (to my mind) a sickly sweet liquid.

January 25 will be what appears to be a ladyboy (literal translation 'Miss Transformation"), the winner getting 40,000 baht.

There will be other live entertainments nightly.

In past year's the banned alcohol sales, but I had no hassles bringing in my own.

The past few events down there have been degraded by huge canvas awnings set up...I hope they avoid them this time round. They are a fire hazard and block the flow of air...not smart in a place where so much cooking is going on...

Good luck in Songkhla phuketsub! Phuket FC will be missing the support for sure, as well as the beer vendors.
