The student uniform, once again, has become the center of attention when the Japanese media announced that Thai university uniforms, with its short-sleeve white blouse and short black skirt, as the world’s sexiest student uniform, based on an online survey. The news has caused people in the educational sphere to strike a note of disapproval one after another.

Deputy Education Minister Chaiyos Jiramethakorn said universities and business colleges should come down hard on revealing outfits. He said the ministry is set to call in university administrators to discuss the problem and work out policies to deal with it.

Quite a few people suggest that student uniforms be discontinued in order to end the fuss.

Regardless, it must be admitted that university students these days wear uniforms that grown-ups regard as improper.

They dress in a very short skirt and a slim-fit blouse that allow parts of their body to be easily seen.

One main reason is that they want to adapt their uniform to the current popular fashion trend in order attract eyeballs. Such is a common habit among those going into adulthood.

Educational institutes, themselves, are partly to blame, many have made their student uniforms more flashy in hopes of attracting more students to enroll. The practice is prevalent among business and vocational schools. Sadly, for some schools, academic excellence or the quality of teaching does not seem to be their focus anymore.

The most popular type of student uniforms are the one likened to a Japanese uniform, which consists of a high-waisted top, a plaid skirt and long crew socks.

In universities, although there are rules governing student uniforms, students usually modify their outfits to make them more attractive, like making the skirt shorter or the shirt tighter than is permitted.

Some may say imposing a dress code on students does not solve the problem of sexy and improper outfits because they will eventually find their own way to restyle the uniforms.

Still, scrapping the student uniform would not put an end to this problem either, since some students certainly will wear more revealing clothes.

While those who never step out of the line will continue to wear plain outfits.

Therefore, having uniforms should be better than not having ones at all.

At least, the existence of uniforms will help teach our children about discipline and courtesy. Uniforms will remind them of their status as students whose role is to study and seek knowledge. Students in uniforms should be mindful in whatever they do or don’t do.

Just like Buddhist monks, whose orange gown will warn them against any wrongdoing. (though, some may apparently choose to do it, dressed as commoners.)

The most practical solution could be to educate and make students appreciate the value of wisdom and good deeds, instead of external beauty, stardom and fame.

The cannot be achieved simply by setting rules or organizing a few hours of training programs.

But good conscience should be gradually instilled in students through constructive and self-improvement activities that give the young guns space to exercise and exhibit their skills and abilities. And they should be entitled to rewards, praise and respect.

Of course, this is not a cure-all medicine, but at least, the method has its own benefits and has no negative side effects.

World wide most all universities do NOT force adults to wear uniforms. This is just a symptom of Thailands ancient mindset about how to control youth, which is utterly out of tune with world standards. Unless you couldn't forced wearing of Chadors for muslim unis.

No young girl wants to look like just another cipher in the same clothes as ALL her friends, so they use what assets they have by wearing the tightest clothes that show off what they have. If they were free to dress as they chose, in a reasonable manner, they likely would dress MORE conservatively relative to tightness and what they try and show.

The 'authorities' are clueless about all this.

One can only laugh. An absolutely classic article. Of course the enforcing the uniform rules is not practical, so the better way is to "make students appreciate the value of wisdom and good deeds, instead of external beauty, stardom and fame.". What world do these so called educators live in?????

At my university (in Thailand) we'd have a clamp down about once a year. People would get thrown out of class for wearing the wrong color shoes and then 2 weeks later everyone would be walking around looking like hookers again.

Without complete repression your not gonna stop girls looking how they wanna look so why not just let them be. Apart from anything else, who wants girls to look less sexy? Guys obviously don't. Girls obviously don't. It's natural

I was on the SkyTrain the other day, and had a pair of comely, university uniformed lasses standing nearby...

Both were tallish, thin, long hair, and had tight slim fit black skirts that were VERY short.... almost up to their xxxxx... And then, on top of that, they had a front v slit in the mini skirts, just to go even a bit higher...

Indeed, they certainly found a way to get noticed....

Since when are university students not considered "grown ups"? Why are they being referred to as "children" in this article? Be realistic. If the girls in university for either financial or academic reasons had not been able to go there, they would most likely be working full-time, getting married and starting families. If you're 18 or over, you're an adult and #1 adults should not be forced to wear uniforms to attend school and #2 how 'sexy' a woman chooses to dress is her concern, within the limits of what the society defines as indecent exposure. You want non-sexy female dress codes, go to a Muslim country. Thais generally do not have the prudish western ideas about sex and sexiness. The girls want to look like that. Let them. That's how you treat an adult.

Is it really such a problem? I think it is positive, that girls are allowed to show themselves off. They are not committing a crime, nor it affecting their learning ability. For gods sake, it is a bit of positive publicity that perhaps Thailand had it right by allowing their students to look nice and feel sexy. At least let them enjoy their university years. It is about expression, about growing up, and about being human whilst getting an education - maybe a better focus would be cracking down on the black african women on Nana soi 3 & 4 that wear tight clothes and harass the hell out of anyone wakling past, often physically grabbing hold of them and refusing to let go (it happens to me regularly sadly).

A better focus would be on the highschool students out shooting and stabbing each other, or the many other far more serious issues facing the government. Having literally hundreds of crack downs on various issues each year (some repeated annually, as earlier noted) does not provide good results. Maybe the politicians should look at the concept of university - does teaching the student engineering, nursing, teaching, computing and mathematics to all students all at once make Thailand a better place? Probably not. But teaching a single student to be a star engineer, another to be a star nurse/doctor etc will. Focus energies on your biggest problems, and leave the small problems until they are big enough to be worth your time.

Seriously Politicians of Thailand, it is time you started "cracking down" on something constructive, instead of picking on university students learning to express themselves.

I think you could have phrased this a bit better: '*Every* young girl (or boy) wants to look like just another cipher in the same clothes as ALL her friends... ' is better. --That's why she dresses the way she does. It follows that if she is free to dress as she pleases, outside dress code guidelines, she will only dress in ways that are acceptable (i.e. fashionable) amongst her peers. She would be unlikely to dress more 'conservatively' as you put it..
