Five killed in Thai south shooting spree

YALA, February 3, 2011 (AFP) - A 73-year-old man was among five people killed when gunmen opened fire on a grocery store in Thailand's troubled, Muslim-majority south on Thursday, police said.

The elderly man, two women aged 60 and 44, and two men aged 62 and 53 were shot when up to six unknown assailants with assault riffles sprayed bullets into a crowd in front of the shop in insurgency-plagued Pattani province.

A further three people were wounded in the shooting spree. Authorities found more than 90 bullet casing at the scene.

Police, who had previously said the Buddhist villagers had gathered for early morning exercises, said they were in fact buying food to give to monks as part of a religious ceremony.

"The attack is believed to be the work of militants," local police commander Colonel Wallop Chamnong-arsa said.

In a separate attack, a 49-year-old Muslim rubber tapper was found dead with his throat cut in Pattani on Thursday morning. Police said he had also been hit over the head with a blunt object.

Shadowy Islamic insurgents have waged a violent campaign in Thailand's southernmost region bordering Malaysia since early 2004, leaving more than 4,400 people dead, including both Muslims and Buddhists.

Fighting appears to have intensified recently: a bomb attack in Yala province killed nine villagers last week and an unusually brazen attack by armed rebels a week earlier on a military base killed at least four soldiers.

Thailand extended emergency rule on January 18 in most of the Muslim-majority region for another three months, despite rights groups' concerns about the powers given to the military.

Kind of says it all - I think Marshall Law has to come back as the extremism of these unnecessary deaths is continuously rising without any rhyme or reason other than an "us & them" attitude between both sides however I concur - the Islamic extremism is a major issue.

Five people killed in Pattani attack

PATTANI, Feb 3 – Suspected insurgents early Thursday fired on a Buddhist community in the southern border province of Pattani, killing five people and wounding four others.

Among those killed included Pongsak Phetch, an education supervisor in the Pattani Educational Service Area Office.

Five assailants on a pickup truck with an unknown license plate drove into Khok Krabue village in Panare district. Armed with machine guns and handguns, they shot at passers-by and villagers in their homes.

The police failed to locate the suspicious vehicle after the daunting attack occurred amid numeous witnesses during a scheduled rotation of village defence volunteers and soldiers.

No security personnel were guarding the area when the assailants attacked and left.

In a separate incident, a rubber tapper, Abduloh Kabo, 49, was clubbed on his head and slashed in the neck while he drove his motorcycle home from a rubber plantation in Pattani’s Yarang district at 3.30am Thursday.

The shooting and the killing occurred after presumed insurgents burned tyres and public telephone booths at seven spots in Pattani on Wednesday night.

Fire emergency personnel put out the fires, which caused slight damage. Police said the actions were aimed at creating disturbance. (MCOT online news)

Not sure how you figure it is there land. Historical it has been many different peoples land. In the reality of today it is Thailand.

Do you know for a fact that the average citizen in the disputed area would like to leave Thailand but dare not go against the terrorists for fear of death. Look at the facts they are killing Muslims as well as non Muslims.

If I am a Thai and wants to kick out Muslim in my house, I will not got shoot the Muslim as there are too many of them, and being jobless, they multiply fast. I would instead put a few Arabic sticker on my pickup windscreen, paid some Thais to put on turbans and go to a Thai town to shoot some innocent Thais. This will create a spontaneous reaction that complete the balance of my job for me. Then, I can move in to confiscate (force sales at best) the rubber (160 Baht/kg) and palm (12 Baht/kg) plantation. The Muslim, if they don't like to live in Thailand, are free to cross the border. There is no fence at the border to stop them from fleeing.
