Protest in Kashmir after young man killed in army firing

2011-02-05 21:51:53 GMT+7 (ICT)

SRINAGAR, KASHMIR (BNO NEWS) -- Hundreds of people on Saturday protested in Indian-administered Kashmir the killing of a civilian by the army, the Hindustan Times reported.

Manzoor Magray, 24, a resident of Chogal village in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, some 70 km from Srinagar, was allegedly killed on Friday when he walked into an ambush laid by the army for separatist guerrillas.

"Unfortunately, the villager walked into the ambush, and noticing suspicious movement, the troops opened fire resulting in his death," a police officer said, as cited by the newspaper.

While an army officer said the death is regrettable, Magray's family alleged that he was taken out of the house by the soldiers and severely tortured, resulting in his death.

More than 100 people were killed in 2010's anti-India protest in Muslim-majority Kashmir, which is divided into parts administered by India and Pakistan. The government says more than 45,000 people - including civilians, militants and troops - have died in the region over the past two decades.
