Information and Communications Technology Minister Chuti Krai-riksh on Monday paid a surprise visit to the CAT Telecom office without advance notice, and urged its executives to support the deals CAT has made with True Corp, saying they would benefit the state agency's business.

The move was seen by CAT staff as the minister's attempt to intervene in CAT's work regarding the deals.

A CAT source said Chuti visited the office during a meeting of its committee examining the deals. He also asked committee members who had resigned from the previous deal examination committee to raise their hands. He asked their names and sought an explanation on why they had resigned.

They told Chuti they had doubts whether the deals contravened any law, and if CAT would gain full benefit from them. CAT has yet to ask for a budget from the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) for investing in the third-generation telecom business under the deals.

CAT chief executive officer Jirayuth Rungsrithong assured them that the NESDB would definitely allocate a budget, as the project would benefit the state agency.

Chuti then told them to support the deals in concert, arguing that they would benefit CAT's business, the source added.

CAT staff view Chuti's presence at the meeting as an attempt to push through the deals.

Late last month, CAT entered 12 contracts with True's subsidiaries Real Move and Real Future, paving the way for their joint development of the 3G service.

Meanwhile, True and Siam Commercial Bank have jointly postponed the plan to sign another financial deal from today, saying SCB executive chairman Vichit Surapongchai is not available to take part in the signing ceremony. It is believed that the deal would be worth Bt15 billion, to cover Hutchinson Telecom's Bt6.3 billion debts and 3G investment.

Why would the govt be pushing the CAT to do a deal with True?

The PM is Abhisit, Abhisit's father is a Director of CP group, CP own True. That was easy. :whistling:

Where did you get this information, do you have any reference or did your Thai wife tell you... so it must be true.?

As for Abhisit's dad being a director of CP. Common knowledge, although the papers do a very good job of failing to point out this apparent conflict of interest.

Next you will be telling me that you didn't know that the CP Chairman's son in law, who wasn't a politician previously, was given a Cabinet post when the Dems took power.

Maybe your wife can fill you in with the details or teach you how to use Google.

I really wonder from where he came up with that one.
