Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has joined forces with a 100,000strong social media group named the "Big Trees Project" to campaign for the conservation of big trees in Bangkok.

Under the "Bangkok Big Trees" campaign, members of the public are invited to post a photograph of their favourite tree along with information about it, including its location, as well as the sender's contact details on www.bangkokbigtrees.com or send it to [email protected]. The contest, which runs until March 11, is divided into four categories: the largest tree (at least 2metres wide and 1. 3 metres tall from the ground); the tallest tree (at least 15 metres tall); the most beautiful tree; and the most valuable tree.

While the first two categories will be determined by a committee, which will physically measure the trees, the other two categories will be determined via popular votes collected on the website until March 31.

The BMA will also publish a book entitled "100 Bangkok Big Trees", which will include 25 trees that win the highest scores in the contest, Deputy Bangkok Governor Pornthep Techapaiboon said. Awards will be given out to 30 trees - namely five largest, five tallest, ten most beautiful and ten most valuable. Call the BMA Environment Office at (02) 246 0283.
