PM's daughter joins list of top SET billionaires

BANGKOK: For the second consecutive year Land and Houses chairman and CEO Anant Asavabhokhin has been named the richest man on the Stock Exchange of Thailand by Money & Banking Magazine.

He was followed by a daughter, cousin and son of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in the annual survey released yesterday.

Thanks to the continued property-market rally, Anant's wealth ballooned Bt6.5 billion over the past year and he now holds shares worth Bt16.37 billion, the magazine said.

His holdings include a 20.03-per-cent stake in Land and Houses and a 1.67-per-cent stake in Mandarin Hotel.

Among families, the Maleenonts are the richest with combined shareholdings worth Bt26.7 billion, following by the Asavabhokhins with Bt19.88 billion and the Shinawatras with Bt18.5 billion. The PM's daughter, Pinthongtha, is the second-richest person on the stock market, with her 14.98-per-cent stake in the family-controlled Shin Corp worth Bt10.2 billion, the magazine said.

Bhanapot Damapong, Thaksin's brother-in-law and second-largest shareholder of Shin, is the third-richest on the list, with a 13.77-per-cent stake worth Bt9.38 billion.

Thaksin's only son, Panthongtae, stayed in fourth place despite slipping to third on the ranking of Shin shareholders. His 10.01-per-cent stake is worth Bt6.82 billion.

Panthongtae also has a 2.97-per-cent stake in Thai Military Bank worth Bt1.05 billion.

Climbing eight places to No 5 is Italian-Thai Development president Premchai Kanasuta, whose 22.7-per-cent holding in the construction firm and 1.7-per-cent slice of Mandarin Hotel are worth Bt5.6 billion and Bt82 million respectively.

Premchai is Bt3.69-billion richer than last year, the magazine said.

Major shareholders of property company Natural Park, led by Sawang Mankongcharoen, also faired well.

Sawang, CEO of Siam Syntech Construction, came in at No 13 after her 8.94-per-cent stake in Natural Park was valued at Bt3.46 billion.

Five other shareholders, who each own 4.47 per cent of the company, came in at No 27. They are Taweesak Laotrakul, Pradit Sinthaworanarong, Pornthip Wongthavornkit, Yuwadee Vongkusolkij and CEO Sermsin Samalapa.

Vichaya Chatikavanit also has a 4.47-per-cent stake in Natural Park, but is marginally richer than the other five thanks to his 2.07-per-cent holding in General Engineering.

Two other Natural Park shareholders made the list. Kringkrai Tiennukul's 4.22-per-cent stake is worth Bt1.63 billion and good enough for 33rd place, while Visarn Ongwandee came in at No 34 with Bt622.4 million worth of stock.

Besides the PM's son and daughter, other heirs of politicians made the list. Pich Bodharamik, the only son of Education Minister Adisai, is ranked No 16 due to his 27.23-per-cent holding in Jasmine International and 41.54-per-cent share of Jasmine warrants. In total, the shares and warrants are worth Bt2.6 billion.

Catherine and Tracey Ann Maleenont, heirs of Deputy Interior Minister Pracha Maleenont, were ranked 23rd thanks to their equal 3.93-per-cent stake in BEC World worth Bt1.85 billion.

Penpan Horrungruang, daughter of famous debtor Sawasdi, is ranked No 49 due to her Bt1.08 billion in shares and warrants in Hemaraj Land and Development and Suntec Group.

Not bad, considering her portfolio was worth only a few thousand baht a couple of years ago. I wonder how she did it.

By living modestly I heard. Taking her lunch to work, and using the baht bus a lot. Save the satangs, and the bahts take care of themselves. . :o
