Hello all.

I'm British, and currently on business in the USA. Whilst here I ran my passport through the washing machine, obviously damaging it quite badly. I have been to the Btitish Consulate in Miami and now have a 'one journey only' emergency passport which clearly states that it is only valid for my trip to Thailand, which is tomorow. The emergency passport, while good for this one trip it is actualy valid for 6 months.

I have been to the Thai Consulate here in Miami and they have gave me a double entry TV, stamped into my temporary emergency passport.

Im thinking that when I land in Thailand, I will just go ahead and apply for a new British passport. When I get the new passport, I will go to immigration in BKK and have the TV transfered over to new passport.

Should I expect any issues at BKK airport immigration?

I mean.... its a real mickey mouse passport and it states clearly on the front 'Emergency Paspport' but it IS valid for 6 months and I DO have a TV.

Or will they send me straight back to the States?

I hope they know what they were doing as it is a requirement that passport be valid on entry for six months to both obtain and use a tourist visa. It seems that was/will not be the case. Immigration often seems to take a soft policy on this but getting here may be an issue.

IATA rules for airline travel:

Passport required.

- Passport and/or passport replacing documents must be valid

for at least 6 months upon arrival.

MFA rules to issue tourist visa:

2. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

- Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months

Thanks for the reply. I did mention in my post however that the British Consulate in Miami ensured that the temp passport is valid for 6 months from date of travel. It expires August 27th 2001. So actually I will be arriving with a passport that has at least 6 months validity.

You did not mention that in your OP; just that it was valid for six months. That is how the 6 month validity is accounted for in that case so if your arrival is before the 27th you should be OK. Am sure the date on the passport is 2011 rather than 2001.

Sorry I thought I made the 6 month thing clear.

So do you think I should be ok, in your opinion?

I mean.... Its a passport, of sorts. I have a TV so I dont need an on going ticket. I have my original passport (photo page fine, but paper pages gone)

Can you imagine any issues at BKK?

I am pretty nervous about this to be honest.

Should not be a problem with the looks. And now that the passport will be valid for six months for travel entry it should be fine. OP only said six month passport not that it was actually dated longer than that so the reason was concerned.

Temporary emergency passports are usually issued to enable a citizen to return to their own country. Unusual to make it valid for a third country.

Still, the Consulate accepted it and placed a visa in it for Thailand, so it may work.

I would envision problems with the airline uplifting you initially, and there would have to be a chance you would be refused entry. Who knows.

The fact it is valid for only one trip would be a problem for Immigration in Thailand. (You can't travel out again on the document so the six month validity means little)

Do you live here? What sort of visa is it? Do you have a onward ticket to Britain? Do you have time to get a new passport where you are?

When I get the new passport, I will go to immigration in BKK and have the TV transfered over to new passport.

You cannot get your tourist visa transferred over to the new passport, immigration will only transfer your current (60 day) permission to stay. To use the second entry on your tourist visa you will have to travel with both your new passport as well as your emergency passport with the visa.
