Thai police seize six tiger cubs: wildlife group

BANGKOK, February 23, 2011 (AFP) - Police in Thailand have seized six tiger cubs in a raid on the home of a suspected weapons dealer, an anti-wildlife trafficking organisation said Wednesday.

The owner, living in eastern Sa Kaeo province, did not have a permit so the tigers have been taken into the care of the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, according to the Freeland Foundation.

It said that tigers can fetch $30,000 on the black market and despite their endangered status continue to be purchased for their bones and organs used in medicines, while their skins are prized as trophies and ornaments.

The conservation group WWF has warned that tigers could become extinct within 12 years, with the number of the big cats worldwide plunging 97 percent from its peak to around just 3,200.

Beautiful and magnificent animal, These money grabbing armoles are as sick as you get, another zoo job, no good letting them back to the wild here-they will be dead in1 week-guess in Thailand now only 20 or so left.... Money again--grabbing as much as they can get -and never mind, attitude, what the heck is going on here, its getting pathetic----and NO i,m not going back to my own country for telling the truth.

Glad to see that they were so well acquainted with the "suspected arms dealer" but got him on possession of tiger cub offences.

You couldn't think this stuff up.

Well, I for one, would be quite intimidated by anyone armed with a <deleted>' tiger.

What an extraordinary bit of reporting!

"a suspected weapons dealer, " - what kind of description is that?Did they raid the house looking for arms and found the Tigers?

and then another weird statement.......

"with the number of the big cats worldwide plunging 97 percent from its peak to around just 3,200."

peak? What on earth do they mean by that? Are they suggesting that the world Tiger population Peaked at a mere 3200 or "peaked" in recent history?

I would think that's extremely unlikely.

Surely if Thaivisa are going to post tidbits of news it would behove them to look at the report and at least see if it makes any sense.....I'm not suggesting rigorously verifying everything they post - just trying to see if it made sense on a very basic level would be an improvement.

All very sad.

The world has changed dramatically in the last 40 years.

The brutal truth is there is no room for the Tiger.

Recent headlines from Indonesia and Malaysia about Tigers attacking villagers means one thing. Tigers are getting hungry. There is no room for even their main food source which is usually deer and occassional monkey.

I was watching a programme recently on the television with my GF about Bears. She asked if we had such animals in the Scotland. "Used to." I said. " They were all killed off about 400 hundred years ago."

"Why?" she said.

"Scotland is a small country. No room for big dangerous animals wandering about." I replied. Driving home in my head what is happening now globally.

Her succint response to this. "Soon be same for Tiger. We cannot have big dangerous animals killing people in Thailand."

So if they fence off the National parks. Do you kick the people out and leave the animals to get on with it ?

How many Tigers left then if the top predator in an area eats up all its available food in a small area?

I have no answer for the Tiger problem - because it is a human problem also.

100 Years ago the Panda could be found from Northern Thailand all the way to Mongolia. How many now ?

Tigers ranged from the Pakistan to Siberia.

Now they are in isolated pockets. I keep seeing this globally 3,000 figure banded about. The WWF and others have been using that figure for the last 20 years. It must be wrong ? I even heard there are about 300 to 400 wild in Thailand. I do know there are nearly 500 in Sri Ratcha Zoo...........................for what ?

Money -

the noble Tiger is a commodity now..........................:jap:

You couldn't be wider of the mark. This kind of "doomed anyway" nonsense only adds to the problem.THer has been research that shows there is actually room in Thailand alone to house ten times the number of Tigers in the wild here. Tigers are an indicator of the state of several eco-systems that qe as humans depend on.Please if you are going to voice a knee jerk opinion do your research before spouting off.Another [point is that the Tiger is the apex of an eco-system - if that chain is broken so is the eco-system and it is a system that we a re directly or indirectly part of. In the long run to put it simply we suffer form a lack of tigers -

The same things are going on here as in they would in the Western World if they had Tigers as part of there Fauna.:jap:

How did you arrive at 3,200 tigers at there peak. To do so you would need to know the number of tigers there are today.

Thai Visa just reposts the news articles. They do not claim them to be true. Besides who would do the investigating of all the facts. Some of the moderates? I think not.

Have to state that the killing of people by tigers is really a people problem.

Let me explain.

If man would regulate the population to what the area can sustain there would be a lot less people in the world and animals would have the room they need.

thge reason there are no bears in Scotland is they like sunshine. LOL

I read this as saying that the population of tigers worldwide reached a peak of 106,000.  How this is calculated is not known to me as are many other things.

peak???WHEN?How the hell can you say when the world tiger population "peaked" - an educated guess would have to be that this figure - whatever it is is from somewhere in pre-history......it's a totally pointless thing to say!

I suspect this poster didn't actually read or understand my post correctly.......it's not just aimed a ThaiVisa.

How naive! - TV don't "just repost" news - they choose what to repost, they can edit how little or how much they can even pick a headline. The point is not just TV but all the Thai newspaper are hopeless at reporting accurately on just about anything and avoid any serious analysis in favour of selling a few extra copies.

I'm perpetually saddened at the lack of ability amongst TV posters to view the media and news in an educated and critical manner

I wasn't trying to make it seem like its only one country, whats up with you-I am not being biased toward Thailand..but its serious here and needs addressing. When you try to give an honest opinion-someone cantankerous has to foul the meaning up. have a nice day.
