Thaksin Urges Abhisit to Move Faster Towards National Reconciliation

The foreign minister says the government has not been bullying ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, explaining that the hunt for Thaksin is in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, Thaksin told a Japanese news agency that he wants the government to accelerate the reconciliation process.

During a House session, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya explained that the government is not singling out self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, saying that the authorities are simply doing their job of bringing a convicted person to justice, according to the judicial process.

Regarding allegations of worsening foreign relations this year, Kasit said his ministry has strengthened ties and discussed cooperation with many nations, including Laos, Australia, and Russia.

Meanwhile, sources revealed that in his interview with Japan-based Kyodo News, Thaksin called on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to make greater strides towards national reconciliation by bringing the conflicting groups together.

He added that national reconciliation cannot be realized with protests still going on and without certain circumstances being resolved.

The former premier said such circumstances include a remedy for those affected by political violence, absolution of convicted politicians and activists from the crimes that he believes are political, and the establishment of a justice system that is truly free of political influence.

His right to his own opinion is undoubted, but might his judgement possibly have been swayed, by his own having been judged & found guilty, with sentence passed upon him ?

So he might have carried more weight, had he made it abundantly clear, that he was not seeking his own absolution from crimes, including several cases currently unable-to-proceed, owing to his continued self-exile ?

Might former-PM Thaksin not usefully address these sentiments towards the Red-Shirts, when he phones-in to a UDD/DAAD-demonstration, in the near future. I realise that he "does not know them", but feel sure that his words might carry some weight with them, as they still appear to regard him as one of their leaders.

Thaksin is not entirely stupid. He realizes that a big step towards reunifacation would be his death.

I am not sure of weather this comment belongs in the article or in the funny pages.

On another note is Thailand not unified. It is only a few small groups of people who say it is not. I am omitting the deep south problem. But in a nation of 60,000,000 people in my opinion they are unified. there will always be nay sayers no matter what country. But here in Thailand we have a couple with really deep pockets and no conchies.

Just before the red riots seriously got going last year, the red leaders attended reconciliation meetings with the government. Thaksin had previously said OK, go ahead. Everybody wants reconciliation, right? Well what Thaksin had not bargained for was the negotiations heading towards agreement. That was absolutely not on his agenda. Calling for reconciliation. Yes. Otherwise no. Oh dear. Now how Thaksin maintains control over his troops is to have more than one distant power centre, so he can move from one to another if anybody threatens to move out of his control. The red leaders were caught in the headlights, so Seh Daeng was brought in to break the reconciliation moves. Once Seh Daeng was shot the red violence seriously got under way and the red leaders waited for the inevitable which was to get arrested. Now Thaksin does the same reconciliation nonsense again. He repeats himself as he so often does. But this time the government understands more clearly Thaksin's dance moves.
