Morning attack killed 64-year-old man and wounded 4 others

By The Nation.

Pattani - An 64-year-old man was killed and four others wounded when insurgents sprayed bullets on them in Pattani province on Sunday, one day after a monk was killed and 2 others injured in a drive-by attack

The Sunday attack took place at about 7am on Yarang-Yabi Road in Yarang district which were crowded with people having breakfasts in shops, jogging and exercising.

Initial police investigation showed that six insurgents on motorcycles came to the scene and parked their vehicles nearby.

Three of them, armed with M16 and AK-47 rifles, walked towards the crowds and started opening fires on them. The group then sped away from the scene.

Police and soldiers were prevented from reaching the scene by road spikes traps and fake bombs. They found 52 cartridges of AK-47 rifles and 30 cartridges of M-16 rifles at the scene.

The wounded people were rushed to Yarang hospital. One of them, identified as Pol Sgt Sanan Sangkasunya of Yarang district, who was shot at the lung was announced dead at the hospital.

Four others, including a 18-year-old Muhammad Isris Pathan, were in serious condition and were transferred to Pattani Hospital.

Yula Pathan, father of Muhammad, said that the insurgents who wore mask should not have attacked people.

The attack came just one day after a drive-by shooting in the province's Khok Pho district killed a monk and seriously wounded another monk and a novice.

The shooting occurred at 7am on the Khok Pho-Tha Rua road in Khok Pho as two monks and one novice went to collect alms as usual on the route without soldiers providing security when two unidentified gunmen on a motorbike shot at them and fled the scene.

Phra Apichai Rojrangsan, 28, who was shot in the back with a 9mm pistol, was pronounced dead at Khok Pho district hospital, while fellow monk Phra Suchart Inthankaew, 36, and novice Sakol Semsan, 16, all from Pura Pradit Temple, were shot and severely injured.

The violence continues unabated. Now that it has worsened considerably since 2006, can we be honest and call this what it is; a civil war?

It's gone way beyond 'insurgency' or 'troubled South' now.

It is not a civil war when the troublemakers are limited in numbers and have no official support by the general population in either of the regions.

They are insurgents, clear and simple.

LOCAL insurgents----surely as most attacks are carried out by motorbike rider and killer on pillion. They do not travel 50 kilometers to carry out the attack as they would be checked in road blocks. So being fairly local, and with the community help--local police- army-special forces combining-WHY is it being so difficult to narrow them down. They are being harboured with who, Most of the attacks are not quick over the border jobs. This is dragging on and on. No one seems to narrow in on them.........compare this with security in other regions with the same problem...FEAR is preventing people SQUEALING ??????? if not why not a slow headway into prevention of this type of primitive attack. MOTOR BIKES I know it's easier said than done BUT...

Who have the time and money to play with the government. THINK TWICE.

When sinatra-((-thats what manchester city fans called him-cause they couldn;t pronounce his name)) was given the elbow, I do recall that , during his term in office he told the south if you do not vote for me you will not get any subsidy monies for farming,,, this was why they never liked him, he was not welcome there.

The Issan farmers did get monies for votes and subsidies, this is where the red army is recruited and paid for for causing national disturbances.

Arrested more more drug dealer in the north, and there will be more killing in the south. WHO IS BEHIND ALL THIS?

Seems very much like the thirty year troubles in Northern Ireland. Much of that became about power and money more than politics and religion.

Take a step back and look at the problems this country faces at the borders and internally, not a pretty picture and utterly unnecessary, as most human inflicted problems are.

well I could be wrong but the Muslims in the south are doing what they are best at terrorism.

My question is why in Thailand is it sparked by drugs and not Islam as in all other countries.

Sounds to me like a bunch of Muslim's posting here trying to take the attention of the reality of the south.

Islam is the problem. Drugs are another problem.:jap:
