Visa Run To Suvannakhet Laos

Featured Replies

Has anyone recently done a Visa Run to Suvannakhet in Laos overland? If so, can u please give info regarding how u traveled to Mukdahan, then to Suvannakhet and what was your experience at the Thai Embassy? I would like to see if this is a better/quicker option than travelling to Vientiane Laos or Cambodia. I will be travelling from Ayutthaya to Mukdahan if its a viable option?

Previously I have done visa trips to Vientiane Via overnight Train (which is the most convenient way from Ayutthaya), and to Cambodia via a Visa Run company. Using a Visa Run company is very inconvenient if u are not based in BKK as one has to wait around in town approx 6hrs till the van leaves at 2am in the morning and doesn't return until 12am at which their is no public transport options back to Ayutthaya at that time (unless u want to waste 1K baht on a taxi!!).

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

If you want the train or plane then you will need to leave from Bangkok to Ubon and then a 2.5 hour bus ride to Mukdahan.

Obviously there would be buses going from your neck of the woods direct to Mukdahan.

The bridge to Laos is 4km north of the town.

I have always driven myself so cannot be much help in the actual getting from Mukdahan to the embassy over the river. I do know that the casino always have vans crossing over.

TheQuick7,

If you are in Ayutthaya you can catch the express around 630-7am to Ubon, arrive a bit after 2pm. The next morning early, go to the Ubon Bus Terminal. Sahamit Tours has a bus around 5am to Sakhorn Nakon and stops in Mukdahan. You will have time to eat breakfast then catch the Mukdahan Savanakhet bus from the terminal across Freedom Bridge 2. It will take you to Savanakhet bus terminal. There will be tuk tuks that can take you to the Thai consulate. It is on the northern outskirts of town near the river.

Last time I was there if you turn in paperwork one morning you get your passport back after 2pm the following day. But things change so cannot confirm this as current.

You can also catch a bus from your location to Mukdahan and catch the bus across the river at the terminal.

Savannakhet is a quiet laid back town. Nice place to spend a couple of days.
