ICANN approves .xxx domain for porn sites

2011-03-19 09:19:34 GMT+7 (ICT)

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on Friday announced that its Board of Directors supported entering into a Registry Agreement with ICM Registry, approving .xxx as a new top-level domain for the internet.

The .xxx domain would be established especially for pornographic websites, and Board members supporting the move said that it would protect users and visitors from viruses, identity theft, credit card fraud and exposure to child abuse images.

In addition, it would be helping parents and those wishing to block out pornography from there internet connections by making it easier to identify and filter adult entertainment sites.

However, those against the domain argue that the establishment of .xxx approves and legitimizes the pornographic industry. Adult entertainment industry leaders also opposed the .xxx domain, saying it could lead to its eventual censorship.

Hold it here!! There is porn available on the internet?? Don't believe it, next thing there is going to be music file sharing and such

Uh, no, it wouldn't.

This move is just silly.

Well it makes it easy for Thailand to ban all of the .xxx sites.

For that reason all the porn will not migrate there

It IS truth in advertising.

And it is excellent for Net nanny etc. to protect the young.

Theres a lot of money in the domain trading business. Opening a new TLD just opens up for more easy profit. Imagine selling names, what an awesome business idea :whistling:

MAYBE NOT SO SILLY IF THE ONLY WAY A WEBSITE FOR THIS CAN BE FOUND OR LISTED IS IF IT IS WWW.XXX OR IT IS SIMPLY BLOCKED OR NOT ALLOWED A DOMAIN NAME unless it is specifically in that domain Category . EASY TO BLOCK ON YOUR ROUTER ETC . No more accidental browsing or kids finding the wrong material if searching for innocent words . ie pussy ***

Of course this won't be the only way a porno website can be found, all the companies will buy up their equivalent .xxx domain names but the .com porno sites are going nowhere and never will.

To imagine that porn will only be found on .xxx domain names is naivety. Another example is the .nl domain extension for the Netherlands, there's many porn websites on that particular top level domain and there always will be.
