Former Israeli President Katsav sentenced 7 years for rape and sex offenses

2011-03-22 20:30:40 GMT+7 (ICT)

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL (BNO NEWS) -- Former Israeli President Moshe Katsav on Tuesday was sentenced to 7 years in prison after being found guilty of rape and other sexual offenses, prosecutors said.

Katsav, 65, was convicted last December of raping and sexually assaulting a former employee of Israel's Tourism Ministry identified as A. on two occasions. He was also convicted of sexually harassing L. and H., from the President's Residence.

Two of the rape charges were from Katsav's time as a cabinet minister, and the sexual harassment charge was from his term as president. This was taken into consideration by the Tel Aviv District Court, as the crimes were seen to have a repetitive nature and were carried out by abusing power.

The court underlined that "no one is above the law, even if it is the President. We all answer to the law," ynet news reported.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was a special day for the Israeli State, "a day of sadness and shame," but the Prime Minister also expressed deep appreciation for the Israeli justice system.

In addition to his prison sentence, which will begin on May 8, Katsav will serve two years' probation, pay NIS 100,000 ($28,300) to his rape victim, and NIS 25,000 ($7,000) to the second victim, identified as L.

For how long he will actually stay in jail?

7 years.

Just kidding, my guess is as good as yours. Why do you care? Do you know the victims or the Israeli VIP?

So you really care, or are you indulging in schaudenfraude because this news makes Israel look bad?

Is that what you care about? Israel might look bad?

What I think is that you relish dissing Israel, anyway you can, for whatever reason. As far as this case, it is exemplary that a democracy treats it's leaders the same way as a regular citizen.

So its an example how democratic Israel is? What are your worries then?

but the case seems be not so uncomplicated like that.

Frankly, I really don't care about the case, but wouldn't mind seeing Netanyahu get jailed next. They need a change in leadership there. As does Gaza.

Sure? And you wouldn't be worried that Israel might look bad or accuse someone who ask something in an Israel news thread of dissing Israel?

If you don't care about the case, why then bother to ask others why they care?

Frankly? :whistling:

Do you have an obsession with Israel?

Do you have an obsession with Israel?

I wouldn't call it an obsession, but seeing Israel fall to any of it's many enemies, and that is a real threat, would make me very sad. It would also be sad if they can't find a way to turn away from being run by their far right and military (but that's unlikely as long as Hamas roars on and Iran builds their nuclear bombs).

But that schmuck of a rapist, who cares? So he goes to jail, next ...

Zionism is peace.

I do wonder why people who don't have any personal connection to Israel or Palestine get so obsessed about criticizing Israel and quite often only Israel, when there are 100 other countries in the world doing similar things or worse than Israel. That seems like a sickness to me.

Is see you clearly have some obsession.

This here is not about Hamas, Iran, nuclear bombs or Zionism but you managed to drag all this now into here. Just Obama is missing. Why you are doing that?

What is your 'personal' connection to Palestine? Are you born there? Are only Zionists allowed to write something in these topics?

That sounds pretty arrogant to me.

Btw. a symptom of 'sickness' you are talking about is bunker mentality.

A bunker mentality is a slang phrase for a phenomenon that occurs when a group or individual stops taking new, pertinent information into account, and begins viewing outsiders as enemies, due to an isolation resulting from being under attack. Political campaigns and figures are often accused of having this mentality, particularly when a leader, administration or party has become unpopular or is in some sort of trouble.[1]

oh boy, now i see the photo (sometimes i have trouble to view these attachments).

If there is anything 'sick' than it is to post a group photo of young women waving a flag of a certain country, in a topic that is about that the former president of that country facing 7 years for rape and sex offenses.

For me this is madness. Is that for you Zionism?

I already told you what Zionism means to me. It's a nice word about Jewish nationalism, a dream word, a proud word, a life affirming word, not a dirty word. More than I can say about you, the Zionist definition mystery man who thinks a great peace loving martyr like Yitzhak Rabin wasn't a Zionist. Now that's what I would call rather insane, characterizing a man like Rabin who was completely associated with Zionism, not a Zionist. Is the Pope Catholic? Sorry if you didn't like the picture of the pretty young peace loving Zionist girls. They were decently dressed so I don't know what you're complaining about though, or maybe that's what you were complaining about ...

Oh, you asked if I was born in "Palestine"; well there isn't currently a Palestine, but no I wasn't born in the land formerly known as British Mandate Palestine. But I have lots and lots of relatives there; is that good enough for you?

Here we go again. You guys need to get a room....Or better yet start a thread which allows your debate more lattitude rather than hijacking every thread with Israel or Palestine in a header. The Somalis could learn a little following your lack of a rational discourse. I digress :redcard1:

You've got a point. I'll back off from this thread, my sincere apologies.

I really didn't think this story of the conviction was of any great interest to anybody here but on my reflection it was wrong of me to go so off topic so quickly on it, and let's see if people really are passionate about discussing the conviction of a rapist in Israel. I bet not but I ain't always right, what a shock.

As far as starting our own thread about Israel, you're off base there. We can't start a thread like that! Non-Thai topics are started in news by the board people, we have no control over that. I do think there have been WAY TOO MANY Israel/Palestine topics being opened in relation to everything else happening in the world. This rapist thing is an example. Such a MINOR STORY compared to others happening today.

Again, board policy ...

This is about a politician, a former president and his 7 years jail sentence for rape and sex offenses.

This thread is not about if some girls in a photo are dressed decent enough or not.

And Rabin was a Zionist, i never said something else. Most loved in Israel as a man of war.

If i say 'Palestine' i am not talking about colonialist map making, but a geographical and cultural region in the so called Middle East that is quite older than any colonialist plans and may have a bright future.

Sorry again, but blatant lies can't be let to stand.

The problem here, Rabin does not symbolize Zionism because of his peace talks.

Now back to talking about the famous rapist if anyone is interested ...

Kudos. I enjoy and respect both of your opinions as they are passionate but tend to dominate threads. Thanks for the heads up on the board rules as I have only been Posting here for just over a year and thought there might be a better way to openly present your views. Will have to rethink this approach .

Perhaps he was trying to pull "Clinton";)

Having power and knowing how to use it, is 2 different things.

However i do not think he actually "raped" but rather used his position to get sexual favors.

Rape is rape and not rather getting sexual favor because he was in a 'sexy' position.

without a doubt you are a troll.

In a topic about a convicted rapist you drop a smiley, talk about Clinton, claim it was probably not real "rape" but the victims were offering him favors.

And then you dare to call others troll.

I see.

Look up a simple definition of rape before you continue with your TROLLING

Rape: Sexual intercourse with a woman by a man without her consent and chiefly by force or deception.

Using ones position to get sexual favors in return for possible promotion or fear of loosing a job is also in legal terms called rape.
