I am looking for a fast VPN for watching streaming video, NOT to get around internet censorship. I have used strongvpn in the past but some days it is very slow other days it is just ok/ I am using 3BB Priemere pakage and get good speeds but find VPN's to be better and more secure for doing some business. If anyone have used some VPN's let me know the quality and speed you get. I want the VPN to be based in the USA.

I also use StrongVPN with 3BB Premiere. I just switched to a UK server which was very slow, so I had to try a different server. As you probably know, this can be cumbersome with StrongVPN.

I also use Witopia.net which works well, *much* easier to switch servers, is based in the USA with servers in many countries, and is competitively priced. I recommend them as an alternative. I have used it to stream video from the USA, and it generally works well.

I used Viscosity.

Check out their web site with google.

It isn't free but every time I turn it on I can choose among about 50 different servers in many different countries. So if you want a UK IP address this morning... and a US IP address this evening .... and a Hongkong address tomorrow ... no problem. They also have a few 256 bit encryption ... if anyone needs it. They seem to add a couple of new servers about every month. And they allow you to use their connect/encryption sw on as many different (your) computers as you like, although only one can connect to their proxies at any one time. THis comes in handy if you use a desktop at home or office .... and a laptop for traveling. Of course you can buy two (or more) accounts if you need two (or more) computers connected to their service at any one time. They also have 24 hour online support. When I was setting it up I was online chatting with on of their techie's.

I don't notice any significant change in internet speed (downloading or browsing). Some websites have minor problems with it (i.e. mostly when you download files that take more than an hour) but without exceptions these are usually the risky websites (porn, etc) which I suppose have their own software programs trying to send you cookies and mining your computer for email addresses or whatever.

I've never had any problems using it with banking, ebay, paypal, expedia, American Express, or any of the "legit" sites.

I'm a Mac user, but it's also available for Pee Cee's. ;^)

thanks for the updates I am trying overplay for a few months, tested their speeds compared to strongVPN and always got 1 MB more lets see how it works int he upcoming weeks. When I first use StrongVPN they was very good, but so hard to change servers etc.

I use StrongVPN and have no problems

Have you tried changing the server you are connected to?

I different country/routing may make all the difference.

If you are using VPN's only for streaming video from the main providers.

I would forget using VPN's a far better service is usvideo.org which will give u maximum throughput as the stream goes direct to your home not through a third party VPN.

Much better streaming experience here in Thailand and also the added bonus you don't need a US and UK VPN or indeed need to switch VPN's to few content from those 2 countries.

Although some users on here will tell u the content is too limited :) and VPN is the way to go.

Stream Netflix in HD to Thailand through a VPN is very very very very rare, using the above service it is constant.

There is a week free trial as well.

Highly recommended for use with Boxee Box, Roku, PS3, Apple TV etc.

U can use your PS3 to view BBC content and your Roku to view Netflix, Hulu Plus without having to leave the sofa or reconfigure VPN's for country change at streaming rates of about 2x+ you get through a VPN here in Thailand.

negreanu, thanks for this, it works great. You're right, it works much better than a VPN for streaming video. I just finished watching F1 live, and the picture was almost perfect. I lost the connection only once over 2 hours, for 30 seconds or so, compared to every 5-10 minutes using a VPN. There may still be times when a VPN is needed- but not for general video streaming as you described.

can switch to any of their servers at will, works well for me. hulu, bbc etc

For video streaming as you describe there is not better way than usvideo.org for thailand. IF you are using VPN's for video content only such as the above 2 you mention. Then you are really are missing out on quality high speed streaming from the supported providers. Doing it this way avoids third party VPN servers and streaming is direct to your device from the provider and also it is not SSL streamed through a VPN - again makes the streaming 3x faster than using a VPN.

Actually, there is another way that is better than using any VPN period, and in my testing, it works very well for all of the popular U.S. video streaming sites...

And that is to use a VPN provider that provides, as part of their service, a private proxy server.... One provider that offers that for free, as part of their paid packages, is Witopia.net...

I've done a lot of testing on this and the results came out as follows. There are several different flavors of VPN.... with the most common perhaps being Open SSL and PPTP....

When I did repeated tests to the same DSL Reports speed test sites on the U.S. West Coast, the Open SSL type VPN consistently provided the slowest speeds.... Then PPTP was consistently faster, usually by a couple hundred Kbps...

But faster than either of those was using Witopia's private proxy server, which consistently was faster than PPTP by a couple hundred Kbps... all of the above done using a True 10 Mbps cable connection in BKK.

The reason for the above, as I began reading up on it, is Open SSL and PPTP both include various kinds of encryption, designed to protect the content from snooping and monitoring and/or censorship. That takes a toll on their speed and performance.

With a private proxy, there is no encryption involved, so the speeds are much better. But the proxy still gives you the U.S. IP address that is required by the various video streaming services...

And, since it's a private password-protected proxy that's only open to paying customers of that VPN service, it's secure and not overloaded unlike the various public proxies...

As I said, I've tested using their proxy with all of the major U.S. commercial video streaming services, and I've yet to find one where it didn't work or accept that as a valid U.S. IP...

So I'm still paying $40 for an annual subscription to Witopia's basic-level VPN service. But these days, I don't use Open SSL or PPTP anymore, since for the purpose cited by the OP, there's really no need in Thailand do have that kind of content encrypted...

Unfortunately, a friend of mine checked with Strong VPN and apparently they do not offer their own proxy.... I'm not sure to what extent other VPN providers do... apart from Witopia... But I'm assuming some others likely do as well.

When I first got into this whole subject, I thought I needed to use a VPN and didn't really understand the differences between the various varieties... But now I do.... and choosing the right type of connection (proxy vs. PPTP vs Open SSL) can make a major difference in the speeds you'll achieve.

BTW, I should have added, they have proxy server locations in Los Angeles, Virginia, London and Hong Kong, so those are the geographic IP locations that are available using that approach. The L.A. one, of course, works very well for accessing the major U.S. services.

http://wiki.personalvpn.net/wiki/Using_Your_WiTopia_Proxy

When should I use it?

Normally, if the VPN is meeting your needs, you should use it and not the proxy. But, because the VPN encrypts all your data, which exacts a "tax" on performance, you may enjoy greater speeds for web-based traffic from the proxy. Also, because the proxy seeks out different ports, it may function better when specific measures are being used by ISPs (or entire countries, like China) to throttle, filter, and interfere with VPN traffic.

Are the WiTopia proxy servers safer and more reliable than using anonymous proxies I may find on the Internet?

YES!!!

If you have already been using anonymous proxies, and enjoy using them, then this is ideal for you. WiTopia proxy servers are only used by our customers who authenticate themselves as WiTopia customers. That alone provides a stronger measure of safety and performance. Beyond that, WiTopia proxy servers are housed in secure data centers and are actively maintained and secured by us. Uninterruptible power backups, ISP diversity, security checks, and regular maintenance helps ensure a safe, reliable, and secure experience, as well as higher performance versus free proxies. Free anonymous proxy servers that you find on the Internet can be set up by anyone, and often they are used for malicious practices such as monitoring and stealing your data. Do NOT use them.

I'm sure Negreanu will correct me if I'm wrong about this, since he's our local expert about the Unblock-us service...

But for starters, they're a bit more expensive that the Witopia proxy I mentioned... That Witopia package is $39.95 for the year... whereas Unblock-us is $4.99 a month or $50 for a year subscription... I wouldn't make the decision, though, on the basis of a $10 a year cost differential...

One main difference between the two approaches, as best I understand it, is that with Unblock-us, you get access only to the specific list of content providers that Unblock-us covers.... They seem to keep changing their web pages, so right now, I can't find online the full list of streaming sites that they'll give access to....

Whereas with a proxy, similar to a VPN, you can access whatever sites are available to your geographic IP location. For UK folks, for example, there may well be UK content that's not offered via Unblock-us, that would be available via a UK-based proxy.... or VPN for that matter, although as I explained above, the VPN is going to be slower.

Another area where I've found Unblock-us' web site somewhat misleading over time, although it's better now, is on the issue of accessing paid streaming services... Just to be clear, just the same as with a proxy or VPN service, they don't give you access to Netflix or Hulu Plus or NFL or MLB, etc... They give you the ability to receive that content, if you're separately purchasing a subscription from that particular service provider...

And, as far as the major U.S. TV networks are concerned, Unblock-us doesn't give you streams of their live broadcast service... but rather... access to their video-on-demand web sites, where past episodes are available... I don't think they're quite clear about that when they list the logos of CBS and the other major networks on their web page.

For accessing the live broadcast streams of U.S. TV networks, there are other services that do provide that... such as http://www.ustvnow.com/, which actually offers for FREE the live streams, East Coast feed, of the major over the air networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, and CW). But then also offers paid packages for the live broadcast streams of the various cable networks.

The true advantage of unblock-us.com is basically the following:

1. The speed is much faster for video streaming skipping the slow and congested VPN servers. For example HD streaming from Netflix is almost not possible reliably through a VPN.

2. Once setup the whole thing is invisible - normal web browsing is unaffected, there is no connecting and disconnecting from a VPN or if you wish to watch BBC you don't have to disconnect your us vpn connect to UK vpn then when finished that disconnect the uk and then reconnect us vpn.

3. It works with all devices such as those that do not have a VPN option such as Apple TV, Roku XDS, PS3. Sony Internet TV's etc. iPads etc. (Requires DNS change on your home router)

Number 2 & 3 is a huge advantage over VPN streaming and makes the chill out on the sofa option with remotes watching netflix, bbc, hulu etc. an invisible procedure and "Wife friendly" yes there are other ways to do it using for example DD-WRT on a vpn router and internet sharing from your main home computer. But it is not all that user friendly for the end user.

Also VPN's tend to auto disconnect after a set time or data throughput sometimes halts which requires a reconnection of the VPN then resume. There is no such problem with unblock-us.com.

My advice is get yourself down to power mall buy a sony internet tv with hulu and netflix already built into it a subscription to unblock-us.com and setup your home router then bin UBC forever. :)

Don't get me wrong VPN is still a viable option for streaming country restricted content but there are better more efficient services such as the above. Most of the people who have tried it on thaivisa love it just search back and those who have not tried it do not truly see the speed and simplicity for home media content in thailand.

Supported services are listed on the front page of their website. And at the end of the day there is a free trial so you can try and see the difference for yourself before you buy.

I agree with what negreanu on unblock-us. Been using the service with 3BB indy 6mb/512k. I mostly stream Netflix with Roku 2 XS. Video quality is depend on the 3BB net capability. The picture is decent on my FullHD LCD tv.

I did notice the 3BB indy package work well on morning 7am till around 5pm afternoon with no stoppages whilst after 5pm the connection tend to get slow and stoppages start occur. But it is still bearable because one 40mins TV Series stop about max 3 times.

I had also setup few provies server VPS myself (total 4, 2 are US VPS IP), but the streaming result is not as good as what unblock-us provided. Their method is using own DNS to "fool" the US site so that anyone around the world can get US/UK specific contents.

Out of topic: Who have Hulu+ account that can share? I am willing to share the monthly fee too. I dont have any US cc to sub in the first place. Thank in advance.

Running on 16MB True ADSL video quality is 4 on netflix on the roku but usually force HD (You know the Roku force netflix HD trick with the remote?)

US credit card go with these guys: USunlocked a full us cc that works with hulu+ etc. etc. and even iTunes which has really thorough country credit card checking been using them for over a year without issue. fund the supplied virtual visa card with your paypal account from any country. Funds arrive on the card 2 days later I just put $500 at a time on it for subscriptions and iTunes purchases.

Regarding Negreanu's comments above, I think you need to distinguish between actual VPN connections (SSL or PPTP) and private proxy connections thru providers such as Witopia...

I've used and know both... Apart from being faster than VPN per se, the private proxy is more of a one-time set and forget set-up, similar to Unblock-us, but via a different method. For the private proxy, you simply enter in the proxy address into the Network settings of your browser, the choice is saved there, and you're done...

As you said, the PPTP and Open SSL services do involve more about having to manually connect and sometimes getting disconnected or having to reconnect... Though like the private proxy, they give you a selectable choice of server/IP locations in various cities and countries, depending on your provider.

The private proxy clearly has the advantage of working with the full range of available content for that area... vs. the more limited providers available via Unblock-us... But as you've pointed out before, if the ones available via Unblock-us are the only ones you want to see, then, no problem.

Ultimately, whether it's private proxy or Unblock-us, any incoming content is in the end going to come through one's local ISP connection... which may impose its own speed constraints...

All other things being equal, same ISP service plan and same content provider such as Netflix or whatever, it would be interesting to see whether there are in fact speed differences between Unblock-us and a good private proxy.

a good private proxy.

The disadvantage and of that is the middle-man proxy server still so your going as an example below with distance just as an example:

Netflix (500 miles) Proxy / VPN server (500 miles) Browser / Home device

total 1000miles

Where as with us unblocked.com

Netflix (500 miles) Browser / Home Device

total 500miles

The implications of this with regard to streaming content is an incredible difference in picture quality, streaming rates.

Also with unknown factor of proxy/vpn connection server speed and congestion. It is better to remove that middle man server totally if you can.

About the USunlocked, I did intend to using their cc service. But, their latest updete on their blog stated it is no longer accept by Hulu. What a sad new. :(

Didn't realise that the new card has stopped working with hulu plus. I am sure the us unlocked guys will sort it out soon.

I have another option for you in that case if you email jessica at epointsdelivered.com and say you were recommended about visa cards you can pay her with her confirmation say us$120.00 and she will email u a virtual us visa card with value of $100 which is more than enough for hulu plus years subscription.

I previously did a free trial test with Unblock-us using the DNS settings on my PC...not on my router... And it didn't work well...and several popular sites were inaccessible... But that was some time back...and I didn't know about private proxies then.

But since I raised the issue here, maybe I'll do another Unblock-us trial....and then do a Witopia proxy vs. Unblock-us direct comparison... same time of day ....same ISP plan/service... same content provider... and see what results...

Netflix might be good for that... since their player has the little stream speed meter built in... I don't know what the result would be... but I'm interested to find out. If Negreanu's prediction is right, I'd like to prove it so...

Just go through the router method much better i have seen some conflicts with the routers DNS servers and selecting usunbocked DNS servers on the actual device. Not sure whats going on there. (But it was possibly being related although it shouldn't have had an effect of the guy having google dns in his router and us unblocked on his computer) - however he resolved the issue and is happily using unblocked with servers in his router for the last 6 months.

the router method is 100% rock solid and easy to do through the router webpage access as you know.

The way I understand it unblock-us DNS servers essentially just points everything (or at least "selected websites") to their proxy server, so in effect it's no different from using something like "proxy switchy" (Chrome plugin) with a standard proxy server. Of course they have a good thing going and just refer to "proprietary technology" but sites such as http://www.quora.com/How-does-unblock-us-com-works seems to confirm it's just another way to setup a proxy server.

Posted (edited)

its not a proxy service. if it was that simple they would offer all providers in that specific country for example the 4od and channel 5 service is not supported - if it was a simple proxy with a uk ip then of course it would be supported there is no reason not too.

As far as I can tell the unblock US server routes for example the country/IP section of the netflix authentication at the beginning of each stream to their server and once this has been authenticated the stream is sent direct.

The only rerouting of occurs of ip authentication the stream is direct.
