Iranian arrested at Thai airport with 'ice' valued at Bt20 million

BANGKOK, April 11 - Thai police on Monday arrested an Iranian man at Suvarnabhumi Airport for smuggling 6.8 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, also known as 'ice,' worth Bt20 million (US$660,000).

The arrest of Mehdi Nikzad, 27, was a joint operation between Thailand' s Narcotics Suppression Bureau, the Immigration Police and Special Branch Police.

Mr Mehdi, travelling from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, confessed that he was hired by a fellow countryman to smuggle the crystal meth to a Malaysian agent, who was to pay the carrier once the work was completed.

Thirteen bags of the drug, with a total weight of 6.8 kg, were hidden variously in a laptop computer, an aerosol spray can and electrical appliances in order to evade checks by authorities.

That's what the Australian Federal Police do if they are aware of Australian citizens taking drugs out of the country destined for another. Take the Bali 5 who were arrested upon entering Indoneasia after being informed by Federal police. Nisac reportedly confessed that he had been hired to deliver the drugs to a customer in Kuala Lumpur, Atithep said. He was initially charged with possession of crystal meth with the intent to sell and bringing the narcotics into Thailand without permission, the officer said.

Would be nice to see Thailand adopt the Malaysian mantra: 'Drug Trafficking is Punishable by Death'. Malaysia whilst not drug free has much less of a problem than Thailand.

Perhaps if the cops were paid a better salary there would be less corruption and less demand for the ubiquitous tea-money.

Interesting to see some of the informed (and ill-informed) comments., with always the fingers pointing at the BiB. Whilst I am largely a 'knocker' of them you can also understand the mentality behind some of this. The 'biz' is pretty much known who does what and who rivals whom. In the middle are the opportunists. Removing competition by dobbing in a source, is old hat Thaksin just simply said - execute - and dealers, users and competition were obliterated. The wealth changed hands as did the ownership of the territories.

It is not going to stop any time soon. There has to be some 'sacrifices' made so the protocol of law enforcement appears to be moving but in reality - it is still driven by greed and corruption and Thailand has no shortage of apprentices. Continue to remove Nigerians, Iranians, Arabs and it keeps the local market under control. Simple economics of supply and demand!

Thailand has the death penalty for drug smuggling and executed 2 people by lethal injection in 2009 for such a crime.

I am against death sentences, whatever the crime is. However i would choose death sentence ovedr 20 years in an asian jail. "Thou shall not kill" bloody murders, give them a chance to choose between life in prison or death.
