Aung San Suu Kyi, five months after her 15 years of house arrest ended? Not very; or free as a bird, depending on how you ask the question.

Fragile yet strong as iron, the yellow and white roses in her hair belie her steely resolution. She had not been well when we visited her this week. Though she steps into the room with bright smiles, warmth and grace, her ramrod-straight deportment disguises painful spondylosis of the spine.
