I had a service guy from Com2U come to my condo to try to speed up a slow Intel iMac, but the results were disappointing after 1,500 baht spent. Can anyone recommend someone good? Thanks.

It would be useful to know which area of Thailand you live! That may help to guide you into finding someone local... but I would suggest it be an Authorized Mac dealer...

Difficult to answer your question if you do not post your specs here. I would say add more ram, but I have no idea what ram you have now.

I live in Central Bangkok near Chitom BTS. The computer "expert" who came to service my computer last month said that RAM was not the problem, but I have no idea whether he is right or not.

Specs:

160 GB Hard Drive / 51 GB free

Model Name: iMac (late 2006)

Model Identifier: iMac4,1

Processor Name: Intel Core Duo

Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 2 MB

Memory: 2 GB

Bus Speed: 667 MHz

Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08

SMC Version (system): 1.1f5

Serial Number (system): W86146Y7U2N

Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CBC07A3D

Thanks M

You have 2 gig of ram. I am 99% certain that if you add another 2 gig, you will see a difference in speed. While you are at it, add 6 gig. Why not? Update your os to Snow Leopard as well, so you can take advantage of the App store and other goodies. OSX loves ram. Think of it as Cookie Monster.

So, first choice, add 2 or 4 more gigs of ram.

Second, update the OS

Third, remove the old drive and add an SSD drive.

All of these will improve your speed.

Good luck.

Thanks for your suggestions. Like I said, I admittedly know nothing about computers. However, according to Apple support (excepted below), I can only add another 1 GB practically to the iMac model I have (late 2006 17 inch). I wonder if that would make much of a difference in terms of my problem. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my original post; I really just don't want to see that spinning beach ball quite so dang often.

(From Apply support website) The maximum amount of RAM you can install in the iMac (Early 2006), iMac (Mid 2006) and iMac (17-inch Late 2006 CD) is 2 GB total (a 1 GB SO-DIMM in each of the two slots). The maximum amount of RAM you can install in the iMac (Late 2006) models other than the one mentioned above is 4 GB total (a 2 GB SO-DIMM in each of the two slots) but the computer will only use a maximum of 3 GB of RAM. Refer to iMac (Late 2006): Memory Specifications for more information.

If the system specs say you have already 2 gig and that is the max that can be installed, then a new OS would help, as well as the SSD drive.

If you have the late 2006 model Imac and it only has 2 but 4 can be used with only 3 available, you are increasing your memory by 30%. Why not? Performance boost will be noticed.

You could, conversely, replace the 2 gig you have now. That is, take them off and install a faster ram, if the specs allow for faster ram.

If you haven't installed any new programs and it was working fine and fast enough prior to the slow down, then increasing your ram is not going to help much.

What you need is professional help! If only there was a company or individual who you could pay to help you............

Can't anyone help this poor fella who just wants to pay someone to fix his computer?

More ram solves many issues. This "poor fella", as you called him, just got skinned for 1500 baht for absolutely nothing. Any more ram is better than what he has now. Try that route first.

This is about the same vintage of my old Imac... I have the same issues with the spinning wheel!

Ram, I am told cannot be increased on the older models...

The new Imac, i 7 is starting to look attractive, except for the price tag! ;)
