Five dead, 15 injured in twin blasts in Iraq's Green Zone

BAGHDAD, IRAQ -- Two explosions on Monday left five people dead and 15 injured in Baghdad's Green Zone, where many government buildings are, the Aswat Al Iraq news agency reported.

"The result of the double-explosion close to the Green Zone Monday had caused 5 people killed and 15 others injured, including civilians and military personnel," said Qassim Ata, spokesman for Baghdad's Operations Command.

The two blasts took place near one of the entrances of the fortified Green Zone in western Baghdad. The explosive devices were planted in two vehicles which were detonated by suicide bombers.

Employees were arriving to their workplaces in the Green Zone when the two blasts took place about 400 meters from the entrance. A military patrol was passing by as the twin blasts occurred.

Ata added that three military personnel were among the wounded. In addition, several vehicles were damaged including the military patrol car. The fortified Green Zone comprises government buildings including the Presidency, the Cabinet and the Parliament, as well as the U.S. and British Embassies.

Also on Monday, four people were injured in another two blasts in central Baghdad. Two explosive devices were planted n the roadside in Jadiriya district, close to Baghdad University.

The explosions also caused damage to nearby shops and vehicles. Security Forces have cordoned off the arte and the injured individuals have been transported to local hospitals.

On Sunday, a security employee was killed and four civilians injured after an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated in al-Mansour neighborhood, west Baghdad.

Bomb attacks continue in Iraq, mainly targeting security forces but most of them resulting in civilian deaths.
