I read somewhere tat it is difficult to live and work in Thailand if one is under 55 yrs of age. Is it different once one is 55 or over? What about owning a business in Thailand?

The number 55 has NO significance whatsoever. The magic number is 50. After 50, you are eligible for either an O-A retirement visa, or an extension to stay, based on retirement. You can, of course, change either of those to a 'B' (business visa) and get a work permit, if you become gainfully employed.

People under 50 years of age manage to stay here by being agile, and adapting to the prevailing Immigration whimsy. Since you don't give much info, it would be difficult to tell just what form of agility you may require...

Read around a bit here; you'll find a lot of info, and be able to ask better questions.

As somebody already mentioned, your age have no importance for working here, it's only usefull for getting an yearly renewable visa, which is only available to people being in their 50's or over that, but if you want to work as well you can't use this advantage because working is not allowed to people staying here with a visa based on retirement. Good luck.
