DSI withdraw bail of Red Shirt leaders Suporn, Payap

BANGKOK, April 19 - Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on Monday revoked bail for Red Shirt leaders Suporn Attawong and Payap Pankate as they are considered to have breached their bail conditions at the group's mass rally.

Pol Lt Col Tawan Mangkang, heading the team investigating the terrorism case, said he was directed by DSI Chief Tharit Pengdit to officially notify the guarantors of the bail withdrawal for the two leaders, whom the DSI earlier released on bail during the investigation process.

Mr Suporn and Mr Payap have been charged with terrorism for their alleged role in last year's violent protests of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) and were at large for nine months before surrendering to the police in March.

They were granted temporary release on condition that they not leave the country, incite unrest or participate in any political demonstrations.

If they fail to turn up on that day, the Bt600,000 bail bond for each will be confiscated and the DSI will seek court issued arrest warrants against them, Col Tawan said.

The DSI also summoned Chinnawat Haboonpad, another UDD activist charged with terrorism, to report to investigators April 25.

The three men -- Mr Suporn, Mr Payap, and Mr Chiinawatra -- will be taken to the prosecutor once they appear at DSI, Col Tawan said. (MCOT online news)

Jatuporn vows to campaign from his cell if remanded

Pheu Thai MP Jatuporn Promphan on Tuesday insisted on his innocence, saying he did not offend the monarchy in his April 10 rally speech and vowing to sway votes from his cell if his bail was revoked.

"If my bail was cancelled, then I will just woo for votes from the prison," he said.

Jatuporn was reacting to the legal proceedings by the Department of Special Investigation which targetted him to face lese majeste and sedition charges related to the April 10 speech as well as bail cancellation for terrorism charges in connection with the last year's riots.

He said he was unfairly accused of offending the monarchy since in his speech, he reminded the government not to deploy the soldiers from the Royal Guard and the Queen Guard corps to crackdown on protesters like what happened last year.

He said his message was that the involvement of those soldiers could be misconstrued.

He claimed other red-shirt leaders did not make any remarks but were charged because they stood around him on the rally stage when he made the speech.

He said he was a law graduate but could not understand the DSI's justification to revoke his bail on terrorism charges after accusing him of additional offence on lese majeste.

Commenting on the linkage between Pheu Thai Party and the red-shirt movement, he said during the campaigning, the party would aim to woo votes while the movement would focus on calling for justice and democracy.

"The party and the movement are two separate bodies which have no overriding power over one another," he said in reference to the party's concern about the red shirts offending the monarchy.

He said he believed he did not commit any offence, pledging to quit Pheu Thai if he was convicted of lese majeste.

He dismissed speculation that he was the reason why Pheu Thai chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh resigned party membership.

"I suspect Chavalit's resignation could be attributed to several factors but I am not one of them," he said.

He also denied the allegation that the party was demoralised by Chavalit's departure.
