Hello:

It appears I have a few gallstones. And they are beginning to bother me. Does anyone have any experience with them? Can anyone recommend a good surgeon in either Chiang Mai or Bangkok? I used to think Chiang Mai Ram was the place to go but in the past 6 months or so it seems quite a few patients I have spoken to have given me reason to pause before thinking of using that hospital. I imagine the doctor is much more important.

Any comments would be appreciated. I am wondering what type of surgery it involves and the dangers involved and the recoup time. Thanks to all.

Norman, please share; I am sure there are more TV members who would like to have this info.

OP: If there are no contraindications, a laparoscopic procedure is usually the way it is done these days. The surgery takes an average of about 45 min under general anaesthesia and usually requires a one day post op hospital stay.

Check the hospitals and surgeons for experience with this type of surgery. I know one of the general surgeons in Bumrungrad has lots of experience in this but I do unfortunately not have his details; should be on the hospital website..

If you do this in Chiang Mai, go to Sripat ("Suan Dok", the private wing of CMU Hospital.

110/392 Intawaroros Road, Tamborn Sripoom, Muang,

Chiangmai 50200. Tel : 053-946900

It is a tertiary level hospital affiliated with a major medical school. Higher quality and much lower cost than you will find in any of the private hospitals outside Bangkok.

Dr. Trichak Sandhu in the Division of GI and Endoscopic Surgery there has been favorably recommended by several TV members who underwent this surgery there. He is a Professor and has published extensively on this and related surgical techniques in international peer reviewed journals.

For me, two nights in the hospital, very good experience, would definitely go back to see him again. I've been going to this hospital now for about five years for various things, quite satisfied. FYI, they have WiFi available so take your netbook PC if you have one.
