My first post in this forum.

I'm in the process of buying land close to Chiang Mai but before I plan my organic farm I would like to visit as much organic farms as possible to get ideas. I contacted two members of this forum and asked if I could visit their farms and they said: yes please come.

I'm involved in an orphanage that has an organic farm and the kids love to have visitors.

So my question: can we not per region have one day (or more) when all organic minded farmers open their gates for all interested to see and to learn. I can keep PM-ing all members in my area to arrange meetings and visits but maybe others would like to join as well.

In short: there is a willingness to learn and a willingness to share/teach. Maybe the twain shall meet.

Let me know what you think of this idea.

I am entirely in favor of open source collaboration toward a better farm.

I didn't coin the term "open source" but since the day I first read it, it has invigorated me.

The continual stir of this forum frankly amazes me,

that it brings meaningful discussion day after day

when it would seem that all the possible topics would be worn out.

I'm at the ready to design the energy efficient irrigation systems.

Saving or Wasting Energy can actually make or break an entire operation.

Thailand farming is nowhere close to potential utilization of water resources.

For dramatic example, go on Google Earth to Portales New Mexico and can eastward into the Texas Panhandle.

I'm an American farmer who grew up in the hay field....and even so, the sheer magnitude of what I saw took my breath away.

This is not American Magic....it is viable in Thailand, today.

Having a 365 day Fully Irrigated year versus a 180 day Rain Dependent year

is a dramatic advantage for a land that has no frost.

While there is not a one size fits all solution,

there are simplified common principles that are easily tweaked.

My tiny farm is now idle, sitting ready for lack of funds,

but the principles of fence to fence water is easily applied without a visit.

Send me the Google Earth boundary path of your property,

and I can do a pretty good assessment from the virtual flyover.

We go over the same items repeatedly,

but to generalize once more,

there are huge open niches in Thailand farming

for the man who is willing to sweat and endure brain strain.

My tiny farm is now idle, sitting ready for lack of funds,, quote Watersedge,

Perhaps you should post in Sob Stories?

OP, there is an Organic Farming forum, check the drop down list, im sure you will get more help there,

Good luck, Lickey,,

Hi Lickey,

I read the Sob Stories thread, but haven't gathered boldness to post there.

It might go on forever.

My stories are different from most because I don't have family ties,

and therefore not as interesting.

Everything I've done is strictly business and the silly tripping points against it.

True story. Some years ago there was a farmer in the UK who won lotto. At the time it was several million pounds and considered to be a massive win. He was a long suffering north country farmer.

When asked what he was going to do with the money, he simply replied, 'Oh I'll just put it into the farm until it all runs out'!
