I have an apartment in Bangkok and directly below in the soi there are 2 manhole covers (TOT utility apparently). Everytime a vehicle sized from motorcycle to truck goes over them they clatter and clank very loudly. It's driving me insane and at night it can be very obvious and cause lost sleep.

Has anyone else had this type of issue and how can it be resolved? I guess that contacting TOT is probably the first step but I'm looking for advice and ideas from anyone who had the same issues.

I have seen pieces of rubber from old tyres or inner tubes wedged in around and under the cover edges to stop the clanking. This seems to work ok while it stays there.

I agree, its extremely loud and annoying! I tried putting sand in the cracks, but that didn't work for very long. The inner tube method seems to be standard, but you need a crow bar, etc.

I believe you might have deeper issues.....and it ain't noise from manhole covers.

You obviously don't have this problem, so you don't know how it can affect sleep ! I used to live near one, and it was a real disturbance. I really feel or the OP

Going through the correct channels is unlikely to get you anywhere fast.

Tell one of the guards at your building that you will pay him 500 baht to silence the manhole covers.

He will pay someone else 100 baht to lift the covers and put some rubber innertubes under them.

This will solve the problem until the next time ToT lift the cover to do some work and forget to replace the rubber.

Rinse and repeat...

i would go directly to the motorcycle guys.

in my time here they have proven themselves indispensable.

This is good advice actually.

At times there seems to be no end to the range of things that motorbike taxi's can do (granted, I haven't asked for their help on trigonometry problems or taxation issues)

Thanks for all the replies. Moving isn't an option so that's ruled out. The rubber tyre idea seems favourite. Otherwise I reckon hiring in a mobile welding team for 20 minutes would do the trick and then if TOT ever have to get in there again they'll need to replace the frame and covers anyway!

Bring a couple of rocks ( 3-4 kilo each) to your room, and drop them on the manhole covers.

I've got a mental image of a " Miss Manners " type advice column in the " Motorcycle Taxi Boys " gazette.

Dear Sombat

When is it considered bad etiquette to ride on the pavement?

You could knit manhole-cover-mufflers for them.

Or hire a contractor to erect noise barriers.

Or set up traffic cones around them.

Or play loud music to drown out the noise; you'd probably get people coming round to complain about that, though, so you could take the opportunity to sell beer to them while they whinged.

Get a job working night shift.

Don't get your ears dewaxed (bit of a long-term solution, and not immediately effective)

Put a jump ramp in front of the man-holes.

I'm sure the people here can come up with lots more solutions, some of which should suit your temperament

Stuff it with a traffic cop.

Give it a go.....see what happens.

Okay, coming back home last night--the old, you-no-can-go-straight-this-lane-pay-1000-baht-- I did and it worked! (Stuffed him not paid, that is.)

Figure it will last about two weeks, then he'll have to be replaced.
