British convicted child abuser ‘Fletcher of the dump’ sentenced to 10 years in his absence in Cambodia

David Fletcher, from Saffron Walden, has been found guilty by a Cambodian court of rape and sentenced to ten years in prison and a fine equivalent to US$5000.

Fletcher, who fled to Thailand from Cambodia last year after his activities on a garbage dump in Phnom Penh were exposed, had already been arrested by Thai police and faced a court which ordered his return to Cambodia. But he appealed the extradition order and remains in Bangkok Special Prison.

It’s an unusual case. Fletcher appears to have been charged with raping a girl he had bought off her mother for US$150 to whom he had even given an engagement ring. It prompts the question: ‘What sort of justice did he get?’

Andrew Drummond here reports that while he has little sympathy for the defendant in other circumstances it might have been made a human rights issue

Sort of surprised this is dumped into the SE Asia section as the guy is incarcerated in Thailand. I have personally met this guy before and dealt with him briefly when he was running his dump charity scam. From personal experience I know he is a scoundrel but why did they try him in absentia when he is detained in Thailand and on his way back to Cambo soon? Scumbag or not I think he deserves to be present at his trial.
