Hi all,

My mate is going to Thailand at the end of June with his wife. Its going to be his first time.

I know that normally when voting is happening they stop the sale of alcohol and this is quite a big vote. (By the sounds of it anyway).

My question is, will sales be stopped just for the voting day or more days? Sorry not sure how many days they vote for.

I just heard a rumor they were going to stop sales for two weeks. Probably bullsh_t.

Just wanted to be able to give him a heads up before he goes, so he isn't to disappointed.

I know theres more to Thailand than bars, but he will be upset at not being able to have a beverage or two.

I thought they could sell until 6 pm the day before election and the ban would finish midnight election day.

Could be wrong though.

The wife says that no liquor sold during election time, when voting is over, drinking will resume. The one day only.

This is the way it's always been in the past. From 6pm on Sat. July 2nd to midnight Sunday July 3rd. (That's the official line -- though of course there may still be some places you can get booze.)

The drinking will continue.....just do it by the pool or on the beach or in your hotel room or any other creative way you like. The bars will be closed is all.

Be sure to have a hangover that day, get up late, do some shopping, have dinner and a bottle or two of wine with it and go to bed. Easy.

I think it may apply on the early voting date also (26th June), for those voting outside of their home province

Thanks for all the replies.

It looks like that two week ban is bullsh_t. Thought as much. But i'm not in Thailand at present so i don't get to hear about these things first hand. Everyone knows chinese whispers.

Thought i would ask.

American Independence Day celebrations on July 2nd and they go into the night with bands and fireworks, food and BOOZE......only place to buy a drink?

Remember, dont drink and vote.

Or is it Drive?

Nahhh, definately vote, since all (yes all) my friend do indeed drink and drive.

Oh, I gotta put on my glasses. I thought you said drinking during an erection and I wondered if that was wise.

Got your number mate! Trouble maker a? I wonder how many TV subscribers 'flashed' over your topic and reached for the 'webley'…… Alcohol flows though TV's veins; it lubricates and titillates the juices. No alcohol for two weeks, No way….The topics and replies would be way too sensible.

To answer the OP's question. By law, alcohol is not allowed to be sold from 6pm on the day before the election and the whole of the elction day (until midnight). So if the law is to be interpreted strictly, alcohol will not be served from 6pm on Friday 24th June until midnight on Sunday 26th June (as "pre-elections" are taking place on the 25th and 26th), and again from 6pm on Saturday 2nd July until midnight on Sunday 3rd July. However, in the past most bars have been allowed to open from about 10pm on the Sunday, as voting finishes at 8pm. And don't forget that Friday 15th July is Asarna Bucha Day and Saturday 16th July is Khao Phansa, and bars will be shut on both of those days as well.

We had a group of people coming from Australia for a 50th birthday celebration for 2 weeks. The Ash cloud has probably put paid to it but we wanted to take them all to Tawandang on Sunday night who advised us that Sat and Sun both weeks are alcohol free but Friday night is business as usual.

Ash cloud aside I do feel sorry for tourists who have probably been planning their Thailand holidays for months and the local businesses they were going to spend up big in on those nights.....

Ironically, all the Thais know very well where they can buy booze any time there is a 'Ban' on. They are not the ones to suffer. It is the poor tourists, unfamiliar with the country, who have to do without. Yet we see daily in the press about Thailand being 'concerned' over the drop in the number of tourists???
