Just A Thought

Recommended Posts

Not sure if I can post this - apologies if I cannot. I notice that all of the sponsors on this forum are from a small area of the island. (Well done you guys and yes, I support all of you - my liver is not happy though.) I assume that most of the money spent on the island is spent in Chewang - so why are there no sponsors from that thriving metropolis?

I will answer that question in due course. First let's see all imaginative answers. ;)

i would assume the sponsors are paying the dosh with a view to targeting the expat residents. Chaweng is a tourist trap and i very much doubt if many that visit are aware that they can come on here and have their lives richened by reading my posts.

i heard a rumor that there is a thai style pricing scheme for sponsors. they know that businesses in chaweng have more customers and therefore more money, so they charge them double for the sponsorship, plus key money just to get started.

I'm surprised the bohput bangkrak sponsors bother given the local expats in their area never have any electricity to power up their computers given all the daily power cuts.

Yep times are hard ,Regards the electricity situation, poor internet, business down,,,,,, thinking about it maybe I'll get a wee discount from T V,

I advertise because it's the expats patronage that I target, I also get constructive feedback regards ways to improve.

also back in the UK we went to OUR local thats the feel I try to replicate, when you walk in you always know someone and thus began the banter.

on the other hand the premier sports bar is powered by generators so it's a place to go when electricity is cut if you don't have generators or batteries+inverters.

simple answer is if they thought it would benefit there business they would, obviously they dont, many are bigger and use other avenues such as Fah Thai. the only bar i know who do regular checks on what adverts bring in what amount of business was the ice bar. many ust the songtaows, some have taken a beating on here. there have been chaweng advertisers on here in the past. times are a changing and this style of advertising is dying out as tv channels and newspapers are finding out. how could you go about approaching them as that would be classed as working and need a permit so its not like it could be marketed.

Horses for courses Nalak. As mentioned before, advertisers here target a certain market sector. Not all businesses are suitable for TV, same as TV is not for many businesses.

This market is not only for expats but also to many thousand visitors that peruse this site for information every month. These visitors do not have access to local newspapers, Fah Thai or Songthews with adverts at their home countries, As for you saying that this type of advertising same as Television or newspaper is dying out, what othe avenue have you got besides the Net? Flyers? Blimp?

Their first glimpse is through advertisements on local sites, for hotels, restaurants, bars, sightseeing, tours etc is via the Net.

This medium must be successful, by just looking through the dedicated forums & sub forums , the number of long term advertisers .

As for local ones here on the Samui Forum, sure they change for various reasons. Some try a short term just to get their names out there, others like our regular ones are becoming a fixture to our readers . They have also helped & thanked members by sponsoring various functions & offering discounts.

Now the GoGo bar in chaweng would not be interested in TV, they simply rely on passing trade, Ice bar or Sounds or these type of establishments, try again through saturation in a specific PMA ( Prime market area) being Chaweng, with their loud speaker trucks, same goes for Lamai.

As for your last question about marketing advertising on here, advertisers initiate the enquiries via our Marketing Department which handles all these matters & let me assure you they all have their work permits. :)

As for the OP's original question, demographics.

go go bars have web sites aimed at attracting people in home countries, obviously marketing department no doing to well in chaweng then must be the conclussion :) i ran 3 of the biggest bars on the island and was never approached once, was not having ago, used to work in sales and marketing and it was just my perspective on the OPs question.

as a matter of intrest why dont the business in chaweng sponser, i now work for a sponser will ask the question what they feel they get back from it. not many google searches would bring up sponsers. as has been said i think sponsers here aim at ex pat trade Chaweng is tourist trade. i assumed there was not a marketing department

social media is the biggest shift since the industrial revolution, 50% of the world's population is under 30, Social Media has over taken porn as the number 1 activity on the Web smile.gif

1 out of 8 couples in America met on Social Media sites.

If Facebook was a country it would be the world's third largest

email is now passe to many

More people access the internet now from the mobile phones or devices rather than computers

word of mouth online is the sales/marketing tool of the moment on the planet, you look at search results for some of the world's biggest companies and 25% of the those results are user generated.

there are 200 million blogs on the web and 35% of them post opinions on products, brands and businesses

78% of people trust peer recommendations, 14% trust advertising

as mentioned above tv advertising is dying, only 20% now generate positive ROI, we no longer need to search for products, they find us through social media

as mentioned above major newspapers are now in decline, we no longer search for news the news finds us

digital book readers are outselling paper books, in February one of the largest book chains in the world, Borders filed for bankruptcy

50% of the world's travel bookings are now made online, i think it is about 1.6 trillion dollars worth of business and this will triple in the next 5 years.

Tourist businesses on Samui compete in a highly competitive market and now they need to get to people before they arrive because you can bet that's what their competitors will soon be doing, making use of social media, multi-media, mobile apps and travel sites. I'm hoping to help them do this very soon thumbsup.gif

From Marketing:

It would seem there are more expat oriented places in Bangrak than Chaweng which seems tourist orientated and there is a big reluctance by these types of business to use internet, internet still only receives 1.5% of all advertising budget spent, this is mainly due to the market being able to provide measurement of its success and the misconceptions about the value of CTR as the only measurement.

The measurement in print and television uses reach and frequency, something that is just starting to be used by websites so it lines up with the other media so it is easier for media buyers to understand and will hopefully move more to the internet, growth to 5% is expected in the next two years.

Thaivisa reaches 65% of all English speaking expats in Thailand.
