Indonesian Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir sentenced 15 years

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Indonesian Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was sentenced on Thursday to 15 years in prison for his role in a terrorist cell, which was linked to the organization that carried out the 2002 Bali bombings, prosecutors said.

The trial took place at the South Jakarta District Court where judge Herri Swantoro announced the 15-year prison sentence for encouraging people to carry out terrorist activities, the Jakarta Globe reported.

Previously, prosecutor Andi Muhammad Taufik demanded life in prison for Bashir, arguing that the cleric's actions could not be justified. Bashir has been accused of being the religious leader of a terrorist organization and training camp in Aceh province.

The 72-year-old cleric and founder of the Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid group has previously denied charges accusing him of funding the terrorist cell which is known as al-Qaeda in Aceh. Since proceedings began earlier this year, Bashir's supporters have staged protests against what they labeled as an unfair trial, commonly shouting 'Allahu Akbar' ('Allah is Great').

Bashir's supporters claim that the charges were engineered by the anti-terrorism police's 88 special detachment (Densus 88). The cleric was charged with providing one billion rupiahs ($900,000) for purchasing weapons for al-Qaeda in Aceh.

However, prosecutors were unable to prove several charges including illegal possession or smuggling of arms and explosives and the use of violence to terrorize people, which resulted in the much lighter 15-year prison term than the life imprisonment, which was being sought.

The al-Qaeda in Aceh cell was discovered in the northern most tip of Sumatra Island in February 2010. Bashir was accused of providing financial aid for the purchase of nine assault rifles, four AK-47s, two AK-58s, six revolvers, one handgun and 19,900 bullets.

Bashir also denied knowing Dulmatin, the network's alleged operations leader who was shot dead by police in March 2010. The terrorist cell was responsible for the 2002 Bali attacks which resulted in the deaths of 202 people.

Only 15 years? What a travesty! :bah:

All the people from around the world that were murdered by his orders, at the Bali bombings and what ever else he did and organised, he should have been SHOT.

A person who brings drugs into Bali gets the death penalty most of the time and i have no sympathy for them either, as they knew the penalty and took the chance.

However a man that has hundreds of people who were enjoying a holiday and the great people of Bali, MURDERED on his orders has the chance of freedom and will probably only do 10 years. This is a travesty of justice.

Hardline Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir has been foundguilty of terrorism charges and sentenced to 15 years jail. The 72-year-old arrived amid tight security on Thursdaymorning at the South Jakarta District Court, where a panel of judges delivered theirdecision in relation to charges stemming from the discovery of a paramilitarycamp.Speaking from his cell at the court before the hearing,Bashir rejected the charges, saying they had been fabricated by Indonesianauthorities under pressure from Australia and the United States.

"The mastermind are these two, the enemies ofIslam," he said.

Just got back from Jakarta last night. The bigger news there, at least in conversations, was the 1 year sentence given to another cleric who riled up his followers to burn Christian churches and attack Christians. The reason for his instigations? A Christian man was sentenced to "only" 5 years for blasphemy.

Most people seemed to agree that the cleric was in the right as he had to "defend" Islam.

In the absence of a Caliph nobody within Islam has the authority to order an offensive jihad, so all jihads have to be 'defensive' in their nature. It's hard to get one's mind around but 9/11 and the Bali bombing were supposedly part of a defensive jihad, hence every atrocity is followed by some spurious pretext by way of justification, blasphemy laws fit the bill very well as infidels are not allowed to give testemony in sharia courts so charges can be trumped up at will.

I note the timing. There was another thread going about some Indian investor whining about Thai wages and that it was better in Indonesia. I wonder if the Indian investor fully appreciated the approach to Hindus and their "idols" in the parts of Indonesia which are predominately muslim? Whatever faults and deficiencies there are in Thailand, so far I need not worry about anyone letting off more than ghastly flatulence in an entertainment venue.

sadly, Indonesia with its unregulated and uncontrolled Islamic schools (unlike Malaysia, for example) has become a breeding ground for extremists and thousands of potential terrorists and Jihadists.

I predict that in 10-15 years from now, Indonesia - at least most of Java or Sumatra - will be a no-go-area for foreign "nonbelievers"
