Egyptian man and two Israelis sentenced to life in prison for spying

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- An Egyptian man and two Israelis were sentenced to life in prison for spying for Israel, judicial sources said on Thursday.

Ahram online reported that the Court of Supreme State Security Emergency sentenced Tarek Abdel Raziq to life in prison for providing information about Egyptians working in telecommunication companies and accepting $37,000 dollars. He was also accused of recruiting spies in Egypt, Syria and Lebanon.

The two Israeli defendants in the case were convicted in absentia.

The case is separate from one involving 27-year-old American-Israeli Ilan Grapel, who was arrested on charges of espionage on June 12. He was captured by Egyptian security forces in a well-known hotel in downtown Cairo, with a laptop and three cell phones allegedly containing top-secret information.

According to initial investigations, Grapel is alleged to have been seeking to inflame the feelings of demonstrators during the January uprising. The suspect, an Israeli army veteran who was injured in Lebanon in ‎2006, was photographed several times in Tahrir Square during the popular uprising. He is currently remanded for 15 days, pending further investigation.

Israel has denied Grapel is a spy.
