Poland takes over Presidency of the EU Council

2011-07-01 21:56:50 GMT+7 (ICT)

BRUSSELS (BNO NEWS) -- Poland on Friday took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the next six months until December 31 amidst serious economic and social challenges in the Euro zone.

The Polish Presidency replaced Hungary which has presided over the EU for the past six months. The EU considers Poland as one of the most euro-enthusiastic countries among the 27 Member States.

This was the first time that Poland took over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU. This measure was introduced in 2007 under which three successive presidencies cooperate to provide additional continuity by sharing common political programs.

"This is a symbolic event. I will work closely with the Polish Presidency of the Council," said Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council. "We will work on ideas to enhance growth and financial regulation."

Among the goals of the Polish chairmanship are deepening the integration of the EU market; strengthening cooperation with neighbors; guaranteeing greater stability in the region; discussing the new EU budget for 2014-2020.

"One of the major tasks of the Polish Presidency will be to launch the debate on the new multi annual financial framework for the years 2014-2020. The upcoming negotiations on the European budget within the Council and with the European Parliament will be intensive and complex," added Van Rompuy.

The three successive presidencies measure was established to have more continuity as the three countries should share a common agenda. This ensures more consistency in comparison to the past model. The fourth presidency trio will consist in Poland, Denmark and Cyprus.
