Russia to consider punishing pedophiles with chemical castration

2011-07-13 06:35:38 GMT+7 (ICT)

MOSCOW, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday submitted amendments proposing chemical castration for criminals found guilty in child sex abuse charges, state officials said.

The castration bill was submitted to the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, RIA Novosti reported, adding that the bill is designed to "increase the effectiveness of the prevention of the strikingly brutal crimes" against children.

In addition, the bill also introduces the possibility of sentencing pedophiles to life in prison for those who are repeat offenders. Other rapists could also be castrated through voluntary medical treatment, which includes chemical castration.

In May, Medvedev had first proposed the possibility of introducing chemical castration for pedophiles, in search of a punishment "as harsh as possible," for such criminals. However, while the President has suggested the bill should remain voluntary, the United Russia party, which holds the parliament's majority, insisted that if criminals were found guilty, the punishment should be obligatory.

The State Duma passed amendments in early June during the second reading, which tightened punishment for sexual crimes against children, including child pornography and increasing prison time for jailed pedophile to be able to apply for early release.

In 2009, more than 9,500 sexual crimes against children were committed in Russia, including more than 960 rapes, according to Russia's Investigative Committee. Countries that already use chemical castration against pedophiles include Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Poland, as well as some states in the U.S. This type of castration involves a series of injections that block the effects of testosterone, the male hormone.

I can get behind the 'voluntary' aspect of castration - but not forced.

Just as henious as rape, is having unprotected sex with someone (whether forced or not) by a person who knows they're HIV positive. It's like slipping them a mickey which will debilitate and kill them in months/years hence.

It brings to mind the concept of informed adults voluntarily getting their reproductive tubes tied. Men and women, particularly those who already have several children, should be given that option - and get it paid for by government funds. I recommend that worldwide, not just for Russians, as there are far too many people - and we're generally making a mess of things.

Chemical castration (or regular castration) is not a solution to the problem. Rape, for example, has to do with power and control over the victim, not sexual gratification. Pedophiles as well are capable of continuing to molest children.

The problem is that the society may not be protected from people with predatory instincts simply because they have been castrated.

Execution by castration would be most effective and fitting ; that or sticking them all on a walled barren island some where at minimum expense to the tax payer ; just leave them there to live or die who cares so long as they don't get out to reoffend
