UK police make 9th arrest in phone hacking investigation

2011-07-14 16:20:34 GMT+7 (ICT)

LONDON (BNO NEWS) -- British police on early Thursday morning arrested a ninth person in relation to alleged phone hacking at the now-defunct News of the World, officials said. The arrest was made in London.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said officers from the Metropolitan Police's Operation Weeting team made the arrest at a residential address in London at around 6.30 a.m. local time. He was only identified as a 60-year-old man.

The spokesperson said the man was being held on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications in contrary to section 1(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1977. "The man is currently in custody at a west London police station. It would be inappropriate to discuss any further details at this time," the spokesperson added.

The 'Operation Weeting' team was formed in February to investigate phone hacking at the News of the World tabloid newspaper and to inform victims and potential victims. The paper was closed on Sunday, ending the tabloid's 168 years in print.

Including Thursday's arrest, a total of ten arrests involving nine people have been made in connection with phone hacking and resulting inappropriate payments to police officers. One person, former News of the World royal editor Clive Goodman, was arrested twice.

Slime balls.

These ,so called, journalists do not really do or create anything that has any benefit to our lives. Unless you wish to hear about sleeze and corrupt politians. Tapping the private conversations of actual victims is unacceptable.

Anyone remember the "spitting image" of the press?

They were a swine of pigs---------------some things never change.

The FBI in America have announced that they are investigating reports that News International were hacking into the telephones of families of 9-11 victims. This scandal goes way beyond the activities of a few out of control journalists. Murdoch has been corrupting politics in the UK for the best part of thirty years. Probably Australia too, where his empire owns virtually all of the media outlets. In the UK , senior metropolitan police officers from commanders of the anti terrorist squad, royal protection officers down have been corrupted. From the days of Mrs Thatcher, every British Prime Minister has done his bidding. Andy Coulson, who was forced to resign, kicking and screaming from the editorship of the news of the world newspaper, for corrupt practices , was taken on by the current Prime Minister as his head of communications with the highest possible security clearance. Despite being warned by several people not to do so. Rebekha Brookes, Murdochs executive in the UK is still hanging on to her job with his full support, despite being editor of the NOTW when the family of a murdered schoolgirl were having their telephones illegally hacked. But she is serving her purpose as a 'buffer', the next one up the line from her is his son James. Plus i am sure that all sorts of 'shit' is being held on various politicians and public figures, that if released into the public domain would be the death knell for their careers. This is how The Murdoch organization has corrupted democracy for years. But hopefully now it is all starting to unravel, and the chickens are coming home to roost. Lets hope that this boil can now be lanced, and the forces of law charged with investigating all of this can be strong enough to do it, and rid the world of this cancerous organization.

Better late than never. Although the cynic in me says that with Ms Brookes appearing before the House of Commons select committee next week to answer charges that she blatantly lied and 'mislead' them the last time she appeared before them, far better from the Murdoch's point of view that she is an ex CEO of their organization than the current one! Interestingly, both Rupert and James Murdoch have done a volte face and now agreed to appear before the committee after they were threatened with imprisonment for contempt if they didn't comply. Another little titbit that has emerged is that John Whittingdale, the Conservative chairman of the committee charged with 'grilling' these people, has been the receipient of free use of Rupert's holiday villa! Just when Mr Cameron has started to give the impression that he is trying to get to grips with this scandal another steaming turd drops into his lap! One thing for sure, if there is any truth in the story's of phone hacking of 9-11 victims family's, the Murdoch's empire in the US could go into meltdown. The 9-11 victims are a sacred cow in the US, and rightly so. Even the backers of Fox News would withdraw their support in droves. Although the silence of Fox News on this scandal ever since it broke has been deafening. I cant wait for Bill O Reilly, Sean Hannitty and co to twist it round and blame it on Obama!

i am sure he would think a one million pound a week loss would be a cheap price for the undemocratic and corrupt influence over world affairs ownership of the Times gives him! Power without responsibility. Hopefully this might be coming to an end if the powers that be can remain unintimidated, and do their job without fear or favour. But i wont hold my breath.

Fox News Watch website posts "Behind the breaks", videos of the panel chatting during commercial breaks. On Saturdays edition, the panel, including Judith Miller, Cal Thomas and James Pinkerton chatting about "The subject we're not talking about today", ie the phone hacking scandal and the closure of the UKs biggest selling Sunday newspaper. Thomas asks if anyone is willing to bring up the scandal. "Sure", Pinkerton answered,"Go ahead Cal". As the panel laughs, Thomas responds, "I'm not going to touch it".

Now it's 10, and the biggest name so far:

Rebekah Brooks arrested

There's been speculation all along that Murdoch was so keen to hang on to her as when she went, the next in line would be the Murdoch family themselves. Be interesting what comes out in her interrogation.

Its getting even HOTTER

Top Bod jacks it...

Met Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson quits

Britain's most senior police officer has faced criticism for hiring former News of the World executive Neil Wallis - who was questioned by police investigating hacking - as an adviser.

Sir Paul said his links to the journalist could hamper investigations.

He said there were lessons to be learned from the affair, but he was leaving with his integrity intact.

He also said he had no knowledge of the extent of the phone hacking.

Home Secretary Theresa May said she was "sorry" he had resigned and thanked him for all the work he had done during his time in office.

She said: "Sir Paul has led the force through difficult times and although current circumstances show that there are still serious issues to be addressed, I believe that the force is operationally stronger today now than it was when he took over."

Lessons should have been learnt.

Change your PIN nembers for voice mail from the default 000 if you have to have voicemail.

Do not use voice mail.

Have silent numbers, and separate phones for business and private use.

Do not accept unsolicited calls.

People who are dead should have their telephone accounts immediately cancelled within 24 hours of their reported death.

Telephone interception (hacking) may not be illegal in some countries, but mobile phone may be covered by Radio Communication Acts. The use of such information is what is illegal.

Of course corruption and bribery are criminal offences.

personally I think he ought to have gone over the Met's failure to do any proper investigation of the hacking affair.

Looks, though, as Cameron pushed him rather than he jumped, which may explain his swipe at the PM's employment of Andy Coulson.

The wolves are turning on one another and it's getting bloodier by the day.

What did they 'get' from 'hacking' the murdered girls phone (voicemail?) and presumably deleting some of the messages?

Met Police Assistant Commissioner John Yates has resigned as the phone-hacking scandal fall-out continues.

He checked the credentials of Neil Wallis before the Met employed the ex-News of the World executive, arrested last week over hacking allegations.

Mr Yates indicated his intention to resign to the chairman of the Met Police Authority, which was accepted.

Mr Yates's decison to quit comes after Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson resigned on Sunday.

It gets still hotter.

Sean Hoare, the journalist who blew the whistle on Coulson, has been found dead, thought to be suicide (though probably not a BiB "suicide" finding).

And a link to one of the UK's most notorious unsolved murders:

This is a story about a claim that Brooks was confronted by the police over allegations of her journalists targetting a murder detective. An astonishing story which at one point, we've been told, had the police secretly watching the News of the World watching the police.
