However ...

There IS a difference if a foreign MARRIED COUPLE wants to retire here. In that case either spouse can be the retirement applicant and the other spouse can piggyback on the qualifying spouse. In other words, it's a twofer as far as financial requirements.

I know many women who came here with their husbands for retirement. The vast majority maintain their own retirement visas. It's just safer, unless it's a financial burden. If your husband dies, you're going to have a lot to do to get your life in order without having to worry about your visa. Also unfortunately, I know of some husbands who fall into the bar life here and end up leaving their long-time western wife. A dual visa is just one more unneeded hassle during this stressful period.

Also, be sure to get a Thai Will. It will expedite transfer of any assets in the event one of your passes. Yes, the Will from your home country will eventually be accepted by the Thai courts, but there will be delays while the document is translated. This is especially important if you each maintain an 800,000 baht bank account for your retirement visa. Thai Immigration won't accept a joint account -- you'll each need your own 800,000 baht account (or your own source of income) if you each want your own visa.
