Frenchman dies during late night dinner with friends in Central Pattaya

PATTAYA: -- A Frenchman reportedly chocked on food and died before reaching Hospital, in the early hours of Wednesday. Police were called to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital to inspect the body of Mr. Thomas Bernard aged 61. Medical Staff indicated he was dead before reaching Hospital and is thought to have chocked whilst eating a plate of Spaghetti Bolognese. On spaghetti bolognese?

I know Farang food can be bad in Thailand but that's got to be one of the hardest meals to choke on!

He could have had some kind of medical condition predisposing him to that.

SpagBol is pretty awful, but even so ..................

Chocks away. ;)

It's kind of dark and apologies to his friends and family, but too bad if he knew what was going to happen, he surely would have order the fillet mignon.

At least he passed while indulging in a Frenchman's favorite pastime.

Yeah, but eating Italian food? Sacré bleu. Oh well, it could have been worse, le Big Mac ...

Being about to die, but not quite ill enough for your body to stop working.

That's worse.

When I go I just want to go quickly. As quickly as possible.

Who said there was anything worse...though I could think of a few?

^^ the Heimlich manoeuvre

read this report a few weeks back, found it online

as background - Highlanders a professional rugby team in New Zealand, based in Dunedin; Jamie Mackintosh a former All Black - 1.92m and 129kg (6'4" and 20 stone 4lb)

Highlanders skipper 'probably saved my life'

28/06/2011. A Dunedin woman has credited Highlanders skipper Jamie Mackintosh with saving her life when she was choking on a large piece of meat. Wendy Knight, 44, was dining at the Dunedin Lone Star restaurant when she choked on a large piece of steak, the Otago Daily Times reported.

Mackintosh who was dining with some of his Highlanders team mates on a table nearby then got in behind her and carried out the emergency Heimlich manoeuvre, cracking her rib in the process.

Sporting a wheatbag pressed against her cracked rib, Knight said the Southland prop "probably saved my life".

"I thought I was going to die...I really did," she said.

Mackintosh said he had no medical training but knew what to do when someone was choking. "I got in behind her and it was like a great big grizzly bear mauling some kind of small animal. I obviously buggered it up if I cracked her rib," he said.

I think you basically grab the person with your arms wrapped around their stomach (a big challenge considering the girth of many Pattaya visitors/residents) and give them a big hug (squeeze upward). However, we are assuming he chocked on some food and has this been confirmed? He may have had a heart-attack.

I didnt know that you could do that to yourself. Excellent.

I have little faith in the ability of most people to do anything more than gawp, if indeed they even notice that something is wrong.

Reminiscent of an old Fawlty towers episode.

Basil Fawlty: "Its allright, he's only choking"
