CAT Blocks Dtac's 3G Launch

When True used CAT to attack DTAC, that was the final straw for me. I just switched my True number over to DTAC. You will have to fill out some forms at one of their main offices, but that was about it. I still have the same number, so there is number portability......Much cheaper rates, and when you call customer service some actually answers in excellent English. No wonder True is scare... :-)

That's basically the problem out of all the networks in Thailand ONLY Dtac have experience using 3G and yes i think the likes of True and to a lesser extent AIS are bricking it.

We who are aware of what CAT-True is trying to do, we can do the right thing. We have a choice in this matter.

We can boycott their services (those who haven't already) and switch mobile services to DTAC for a start.

For coffee lovers, avoid True coffee and stick to Starbucks or Amazon Cafe!

At the end, they need consumers to survive.

We can do our part to patronize who we think is getting the unfair treatment.

In this way we walk our talk :-)

But the sad thing is that we who are aware of the CAT-True bullshit, is a very small group of people.

I think that the masses knows nothing about this.

But yeah, I will never spend another time on Cat or True. DTAC gets all my mobile cash from now on.

CAT management should be ashamed- they've kept Thailand in the dark ages as far as IT goes.

Doubtful that they will get rid of the CAT directors being that the brother of the incoming Prime Minister is the one that set up CAT in the first place.

However if Yingluck seriously addresses the issue, perhaps Thailand will be able to move forward and be up-to-speed [as in 4G ].

That compares with my 4 Mb/sec ADSL service (fastest available in this part of Bangkok) from TOT:

Up: 0.53 Mb/sec

Down: 1.20 Mb/sec

Ping: 65 ms

Why the different units, I'm not sure, but it certainly seems that the new DTAC service is blazing fast compared with the crappy ADSL around here.

Is that 'kbps' as in kilo bit per second (kbps) or kilo byte per second (kBps)?

Here in the states they have been rolling out 4G service for a while. What amazed me is that , since this technology is available, why not try to just bypass the 3G and start 4G service in Thailand.

It might be a factor of limited funding for such an endeavor, and if other companies already invested heavily in 3G , it might be a while before you see 4G there.

It is a trial that was initiated about a year ago with, I believe, 5 companies participating in. The licenses to be given out, similar to the Thai lottery mechanism, was expected next year but that is not so sure now.

Does DTAC work in Chiang Mai? Thinking about switching over to AIS... True 3G is currently very slow, EDGE speeds, whereas AIS just flies. I got 6Mbit down/2 up on a recent speed test....

CAT should be ashamed of themselves. Not a fan of the reds but in this case I am happy that this particular BS - True/CAT - is coming to an end.

By the way network speed at neighboring countries is exaggerated. Malaysia was the best with working and cheap 3G and 4G services starting up last year. Speeds did not blow me away though even though I was in KL. Cambodia supposedly has 3G but good luck getting it to work. Certainly didn't work for me. Laos - yeah right. I believe it when I see it.

Infact the 3G would then be slower than his ADSL - if the numbers and units are correctly given. (Possibly he meant Mb in the second part and not MB, and didn't mean 'different units' as in byte vs bit but different 'different units' as in k vs M. Just want to be sure.)

Well all the so called Thai 3G services would be slower wouldn't they in a practical way? Just reading the latest offering from DTAC and it has the same throttling back to 384kbps after 1GB download, similar to others. None of that with ADSL.

CAT Telecom has given Total Access Communication (DTAC) 90 days from yesterday to shut down its third-generation wireless broadband service or the state agency will file a complaint with an arbitration panel alleging breach of contract.

CAT chief executive officer Jirayuth Rungsrithong said that if during next 90 days the Office of the Attorney-General advised the agency that DTAC's launch of the commercial service was acceptable under the terms of its concession, the service would be allowed to continue.

The minister of information and communications technology, Anudith Nakornthap, who took office yesterday, said he would have to look into the dispute between CAT and DTAC or risk facing a charge of negligence of duty.

He added that he would treat both CAT and DTAC fairly based on regulations and their contract.

Today's headline should read:

DTAC gives CAT ball of string, distracts CAT for 90 days.

If True and AIS can deploy 3G as part of their original concession, under the "GSM Services" category so to can DTAC, end of story.

Any other position makes everyone look like buffoons.

Bottom line: AIS and True find it too challenging to compete with DTAC straight up.

If I have my facts right, DTAC is a Thailand based company, whereas AIS is Singapore owned/based. Yet CAT is blocking DTAC, but not AIS! CAT's actions are a disgrace to Thailand in so many ways. It's shameful that the good of the country, Thai companies, and the people don't come even close to being first priority here.

The phone OS doesn't determine the bandwidths the phone can use, the phone manufacturer does.

HTC's android phones support 850 for instance.
