Tywais
The phone OS doesn't determine the bandwidths the phone can use, the phone manufacturer does. HTC's android phones support 850 for instance. I'm aware of that, the member I responded to commented on Android and smart phones in general. BTW - not all HTC phones use 850, my Desire is 900. ES1
When is someone going to throw the switch in Pattaya? Yea, I know about True3g which is 3g in name only because it's slower than edge most of the time. Pattaya should be a fairly easy town to cover. Put some base stations up on the Buddah hill and throw the dam_n switch. Edited August 17, 2011 by ES1
JetsetBkk
<snip>but it certainly seems that the new DTAC service is blazing fast compared with the crappy ADSL around here. I think the crucial word here is: "new". Just wait 'til there's a few thousand customers using it! I remember when people said 3BB ADSL was fast... look at it now! Kilgore Trout
HTC's android phones support 850 for instance. Apparently not all of them; a friend of mine has an HTC, and a top of the line one (around 20k) and has just had to switch from dtac to AIS because Dtac has told him that his phone is not supported by the 850. So Dtac have more capacity to provide a high speed service for more customers....... So embarrassing TRUE with their crap service Go Dtac

So embarrassing TRUE with their crap service Go Dtac I really don't know what you mean by "True are operating on 5mhz whereas Dtac are using 10 mhz." DTAC are using 850 MHz because the auction of the 2.1 GHz band was stopped. However, TOT have a license to use the 2.1 GHz band in Bangkok for 3G. There's nothing wrong with the 850 MHz band - in fact it has a greater range than the 2.1 GHz band. However, I think that newer equipment uses the 2.1 GHz band. I will spell it out 850mhz is infact 824-894mhz. True are only using 5 mhz of that for download and upload.. whereas Dtac are using 10 mhz. So twice the capacity. And yes it has a larger footprint as long as you have enough frequency in the 1st place.. http://en.wikipedia....frequency_bands http://en.wikipedia....frequency_bands Edited August 18, 2011 by thaicbr

True has more bandwidth than that - 15 Mhz too in the 3G realm (same same DTAC - but they technically dont have it ). (but 2G DTAC has a whopping 50mhz i believe ). Google it ! TAWP
Hats off to DTAC, and my middle finger to CAT (Cancel All Technology). I'll be swiching to DTAC tomorrow! I would love to but unfortunately they don't support android (or any phone costing less than 20k baht to my knowledge) as they are running on the 8.5 frequency. Not correct, several HTC models sold locally support 850, both for Android and WP7. A notice is that most phones are sold in either 850 or 900 - depending on intended market. So one just have to make sure one uses a proper supplier, a gray-importer might be selling an 'wrong market' one.
Digitalbanana
a gray-importer might be selling an 'wrong market' one. Not just grey importers. I bought a 32,000THB HTC Touch Pro 2 phone on the Thai market in 2009. I knew it would never work here as it only came with 900/2100 Mhz 3G - unless I wnet to Chiang Mai and joined AIS - fat chance of that as I like DTAC. I wasn't bothered at time as most of my 3G'ing was done in neighboring countries where it works fine on all providers. Such is the state of 3G in Thailand that finally HTC is providing quad band 3G's. It took them a while to catch on, and many legit Thai sold phones from them still don't have it. You need to watch what you buy for the foreseeable future.

lovelaos
^ kbits per second Does DTAC work in Chiang Mai? Thinking about switching over to AIS... True 3G is currently very slow, EDGE speeds, whereas AIS just flies. I got 6Mbit down/2 up on a recent speed test.... CAT should be ashamed of themselves. Not a fan of the reds but in this case I am happy that this particular BS - True/CAT - is coming to an end. By the way network speed at neighboring countries is exaggerated. Malaysia was the best with working and cheap 3G and 4G services starting up last year. Speeds did not blow me away though even though I was in KL. Cambodia supposedly has 3G but good luck getting it to work. Certainly didn't work for me. Laos - yeah right. I believe it when I see it. It's been in Laos for at least a year my friend, and it is very quick. http://www.cellular-news.com/story/38887.php Start believing.....

I believe... that while other countries in the area have moved on, the directors of CAT, TOT, etc have been fighting for snout room at the trough.
