I love it! ... He had set up a committee to investigate why local police had not been able to locate gambling dens ... I hope that the Chief of Police finds some really intelligent, 200+ IQ policemen for this committee. It's going to take a lot of brain power to work it out!

"Wichian held a videoconference yesterday with regional police headquarters and ordered them to take strict action against illegal casinos and other gaming outlets, as well as stepping up drug suppression."

Meaning: Stage a little show for the public until everything quietens down - and then it's business as usual.

Wonder who will take over the casinos after it has gone quiet again - after all they make millions every day ??? I am sure the re-negotiations are already under way! And drug surpression - oh my - why should they surpress something that makes them filthy rich?

The dust will have settled within a week. That's the memory span of most people here. Then ... back to business.

Police may have found a gambling den

A police team inspecting a site identified by opposition MP Chuwit Kamolvisit as a major gambling den in Bangkok found traces of efforts being made to cover up evidence.

"For instance, the ceiling panels were removed and there are piles of damaged desks and destroyed lists that suggest gambling activities might have existed at this place," police inspectorgeneral Sathaporn Laothong said yesterday.

Sathaporn led the inspection after Chuwit showed the Parliament video clips that appeared to show the gambling den in operation.

The inspection of the site, located in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district, was conducted under a courtapproved search warrant.

The inspectorgeneral said the team had not found any solid evidence of gambling, such as baccarat tables. However, a noodlestall owner said the site, which looked like a warehouse, was usually open round the clock. "The visitors include teenagers, office workers and foreigners. When I looked in, I found people playing cards," she said.

These places are often packed with foreigners. But not farangs. The closest farangs typically get to these places is the cash from their social security/disability/widows benefit payouts that mia farangs are gambling ("building houses, paying for their kids tuition, etc.") in these dens.

I agree. The police, who seem very adept at shaking down everybody right down to the noodle vendor on the street, would now try to foster the notion they had no idea where the casinos were? Hmmmm. So either the police are really stupid, or the police think we are really stupid. Or both ?? :-)

If Chuwit had real balls, he would have taken extensive video footage of the outside of the casino while it was in action. Also he would have sent someone in to take hidden camera footage as well. But maybe that would have been really pushing the noses of the police into the shit......He made his point, the casinos moved in the middle of the night, and of course , Thai style, no one was prosecuted for anything. A couple of police sent to inactive posts, who will be right back next month. ZZZzzzzzzzzzz.

I for one am am just sick to the teeth of the whole <deleted> and corrupt set up. I shall be commenting on some topics worthy of mention only from as now. The complete appointed nutters that run the job here are the biggest JOKE ever.

The government gets in and starts to model the affairs to suit their own businesses, and cover up anything thats opened up, The blatant open corruption is apparent with the police running the force the same.

We might come there eventually, but first it doesn't hurt if those that are effectively owning/protecting the existing illegal casinos got burned some - since they are the ones with most to loose if it goes legal and will fight it any way they can...including with threats, force etc.

Read your Thai history....... King Chulalongkorn the Great visited Europe during his reign. After traveling throughout the area and seeing casino gambling up close, upon his return to Thailand he decided that gambling would not be a good thing for Thailand. And so to this day that is why there is no gambling in Thailand, while neighboring countries have lots of casinos. That is.........unless Thaksin decides that casinos are a good thing. I seem to recall he was exploring this idea when he was PM.....

Thiis is what an MP should be doing. Amazing that Mr. Abhisit's Democrat party couldn't take time away from the obsession with Thaksin to get some action against the gambling dens that flourished during their rule. I note how the PTP led administration acted quickly. Nice change from the previous administration.

'Local' Chinese is the biggest group. Not Thai Chinese that is (although yeah, they're in there too), but 1st generation (in Thailand) Chinese from Taiwan, China, HK, etc. doing business here. Although there's a mix of Koreans and Japanese too. Not too surprising.

That's what they say anyway... I'm not a gambler myself.
