The story is a bit old, but confirms that you better have your own coverage if you're in the back of a tuk tuk and you get injured. http://www.stickmanb.../reader358.html

With the limited compulsory insurance, I would guess the same goes for all taxi's and tuktuk's all over Thailand.

It goes for almost all vehicles all over Thailand. Unless brand new, very few have Insurance covering more than compulsory, and for vehicles over 10 years of age, its hard to even get a proper 3rd party Insurance for those willing to pay

Especially be aware of the minivans/busses with white plates and blue letters/numbers. They are for private use only, and thus whatever Insurance they have is invalid when carrying paying passengers

Driving/riding here you need to have yourself and your vehicle covered, or be prepared to pay yourself. As a curiosity I was run into by an old samlor the other day. rider +70 year, poor dayworker with 40 baht in his pocket. Damage approx 8k baht on my car. No chance in h-ll there was any way to make him cover more than the 40 baht he had in his pocket. So my bill.

no insurance, just a decal needed to say they are insured

not true

DLT is unable to print the tax sticker, unless Insurance companies name and policy number has been entered to DLT computer on this vehicles VIN

but as said, Insurane has very limited coverage, not enough for more than an hour in hospitaltreatment

Actually the cover is 10500 whether at fault or not and up to a total of 50000baht if no fault is proved in court. I found this out by having a minor motorcycle accent with broken fingers. An insurance officer from the hospital came to my bed and told me. My wife got a police report and the total bill came to 11000 so I had to apy 500baht.
